What Are the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)?
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The standards provide teachers and parents with an understanding of what students are expected to learn. Consistent standards provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live. These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education so they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs.

Read an Excerpt

Welcome! This book is designed to get you ready to take the Grade 4 PARCC® English Language Arts/Literacy exam, which will test your grasp of the fourth grade English language arts that you need to move ahead. But you might wonder: Why do I need to get ready? The answer is: because this exam is probably different from other tests you have taken! You will need to figure things out and put information together on this test, not just answer questions.

This book will give you practice with all the same types of readings, questions, and exercises that you will find on the PARCC® exam. You will find materials to prepare for each of the three tasks included in the test: Literary Analysis, Research Simulation, and Narrative. The next three chapters of this book will cover these three tasks. For each task, you will complete reading and writing exercises similar to the ones you will find on the test.

Later in the book, you will find practice tests to get you all ready to take the real one. In Appendix A at the very back of the book, you will find graphic organizers to help you plan your work. In Appendix B, you will find a rubric that will help you understand what is expected in each task. Be sure to ask your teacher if you need help understanding the rubric. In Appendix C, we cover the technical aspects of the test as well as special accommodations.

In each of the three tasks on the test, you will first read selected pieces of writing. The passages you read in this book will be like the ones you can expect to find on the PARCC® exam. They will include fiction (stories and poetry) and nonfiction (articles and information).

Next, you will answer multiple-choice questions about the texts you have read. These questions sometimes have just one answer, and sometimes more than one. Be sure to read the question very carefully so you will know how many answers there are.

And, finally, there will be a writing assignment in which you will use skills gained from your reading exercises to respond to an essay question using information from the readings.

This pattern is the very same one you will find in each of the three tasks on the PARCC® exam: first readings, then multiple-choice questions, followed by an essay writing assignment. We will include exercises and samples in this book to give you lots of practice for the test.

After you work through the exercises in this book, be sure to complete the practice tests in Chapter 5. Also, be sure to use the graphic organizers in Appendix A. These will help you learn how to organize your information.

At times, you may find some of the questions in this book difficult. Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher for help when you need it as you go through the readings. As long as you get used to making connections as you read, you’ll be able to put that thinking into the essays you will be asked to write.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative
This PARCC® assessment preparation book is based on the curricular principles of the Common Core State Standards. Each of the tasks and exercises in this book is aligned to those standards. For the first time in U.S. history, the Common Core allows for shared educational expectations that cut across a number of states. In English language arts and in math, the Common Core is a set of rigorous standards that both students and teachers are challenged to meet.

The PARCC® assessment directly reflects the Common Core State Standards. In essence, the PARCC® is designed to assess whether students are making progress toward achieving the benchmarks set forth in the Common Core standards. This book, therefore, is closely aligned with the PARCC® assessment, and, by extension, with the Common Core standards. For instance, many of the readings you will find in our book are taken from the reading suggestions from the Common Core, Appendix B, which can be found on their website at www.corestandards.org. Using these reading suggestions will give you an advantage when you take the PARCC® exam. The reason for that advantage is simple: The more familiar you are with the literary and nonfiction texts suggested by the Common Core, the better prepared you will be to take the PARCC® assessment.

We are confident that the reading exercises and activities within this book will give you a running start on the PARCC® exam!

What Is PARCC®?
PARCC® stands for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. We know—it’s a long title! Throughout this test prep book, we will refer to the exam by its widely known acronym, PARCC®. (In this book, you will see a trademark symbol ® next to the name of the test. A trademark is a brand name, just like Macy’s® or McDonald’s® or Google®.)

The PARCC® test is unlike any test you probably have ever taken before. Its contents will require both you and your teachers to think in new and exciting ways. Just the fact that you will probably take the exam online using a computer makes it somewhat of a challenge. If you plan to take the exam online, it is very important to look at the practice questions in the context of keyboarding your responses. If you do not yet feel comfortable with keyboarding, now is the time to practice these skills!

Reading activities and these three writing activities will be presented to you when you sit to complete the assessment: (a) a literary analysis essay, (b) a research simulation essay, and (c) a narrative composition. This book will address the reading skills you will need to have, as well as the writing skills necessary for these three types of writing assessments.
