Conference of the Birds

When it came time for the extraordinary bassist Dave Holland to cut his first recording as a leader, he knew just the men to turn to: his former employer and his present boss. Having made his name with Miles Davis and the avant-jazz outfit Circle, Holland began extended associations with two of the most creative saxophonists of the period: first Sam Rivers and then Anthony Braxton. Holland's tunes are skillfully crafted and memorable, particularly the hard-charging "Four Winds," "See-Saw" and "Interception," and the folkish "Conference of the Birds" with the saxophonists doubling on flute. The pieces that use free-improvisation interplay as their structure -- "Q&A" and "Now Here (No Where)" -- exhibit great concern for texture, detail, and dynamics, maintaining considerable interest in the process. And not since the glory days of Charles Mingus has a bassist stayed on such equal footing with his bandmates. Holland's daring, technically brilliant, fervently played lines push, pull, and jostle the music yet uphold a rock solid foundation. The churning, relentless swing that Holland conjures up with drummer Barry Altschul is as thrilling a sound as ever heard in post-bop jazz.
