Overview

Bobbi Carducci's life was about to change. Her ill father-in-law 's odd behavior was a mystery when he came to live with her and Mike. For the next seven years Bobbi did everything she could to save him from himself-while he tried to convince everyone that he didn't need her and that she was crazy.

"Brutally honest and written from the heart, Carducci's intimate chronicle of caring for her father-in-law is a poignant story of strength, compassion, and humor that will linger with you long after you read the last page. Highly recommended for anyone caring for an elderly parent."
Jan Neuharth, author of the Hunt Country Suspense novels

"Confessions of an Imperfect Caregiver, perfectly encapsulates the human experience, not just the caregiver's. When we live in a world of worry, stress and self-doubt, where do we find the strength to go on? Bobbi's retelling of her caregiving years unfolds in a beautiful answer to the questions posed by sickness, health, care, and loss."
Alexandra Axel, Media Director, The Caregiver Space

Confessions of An Imperfect Caregiver by Bobbi Carducci This book, “Confessions of an Imperfect Caregiver,” is stock full of emotion. Each scene is impregnated with it and gives evidence of the theme which is also the title of the book. However, as the reader goes along, it is clear that the caregiver, Bobbi Carducci, is faced with Herculean tasks and performed them to the best of human ability. This memoir is cleverly crafted and one is kept reading to see how Bobbi would solve the next problem in her father in law’s care.  This book was so good at explaining the frustrations of caregiving that I promptly went to Amazon and ordered one for my sister who gave end care for my mother and also ordered one for my brother who is caring for  his mother in law.   This highly readable and engrossing book has value to anyone who is giving care to a loved one or has done so and I highly recommend it.

This book is hard to put down. Written from the heart with honesty and vulnerability, Bobbi encourages the world of caregivers who are tempted to give up. Truly inspirational.

We are all imperfect caregivers and when you sit down to read this heart wrenching book filled with love you will see know one is exempt. Bobbi shares a story that makes one laugh, cry and and say out loud, not again. Every person who is taking care of a loved one or has had this experience will relate to the decisions and hours Bobbi has to make during her years of caring for Roger. Thank you Bobbi for this wonderful read.

"Confessions of an Imperfect Caregiver" is an insight into an exceptionally unique story to which anyone can relate. The humanness of Carducci’s daily struggles with her father-in-law, his condition, and the medical field show how challenging it can be when the parent and child caregiving role is reversed. You will feel Bobbi’s stresses and experience her frustration, pain, and joys. This is not the typical book I would pull off the shelf, but the emotional path it takes the reader down is well worth the read. It may or may not change your view on patient advocacy and end-of-life healthcare, but it will definitely touch your heart.

“Confessions of an Imperfect Caregiver,” a moving true story of the seven years Bobbi Carducci spent taking care of her father-in-law Rodger, is a testament to love, compassion, grace and courage in the face of often inconceivable challenges. At the time Ms. Carducci and her husband took Rodger into their home, they were not aware of his medical history, which included life-long schizophrenia. He also suffered from other medical conditions, including dementia and Parkinson’s, which made Ms. Carducci’s day-to-day experience a kind of rollercoaster ride. In addition to caring for Rodger at home, she proves a valiant advocate for him when he is hospitalized, at times battling with medical professionals to get the care her father-in-law needs or simply to keep him alive. The bond between Rodger and Ms. Carducci is clear, even though his language capacity is limited. At one point, Rodger says to Carducci, “You’re my best friend.” Her tale is nothing short of heroic--invaluable for fellow caregivers. None of us is handed a how-to manual on taking care of an ailing relative—we must make it up as we go along, while doing research and advocating for our loved one. “Confessions” is especially relevant at present when an estimated 60 million families are caring for an aging or disabled person at home, and the majority of caregivers are women. It is a must-read for anyone who has a family or has loved another person. A story for us all.

CONFESSIONS OF AN IMPERFECT CAREGIVER reads more like a novel than a non-fiction book. Carducci expertly uses a fast-paced writing style, figurative language, clif-hangers at the end of each chapter, and fully-developed characterization in her account of taking care of her father-in=law in her home for seven years. I couldn't put the book down once I had started reading it. In less than two days I was finished reading, but I have not forgotten the enormous impact this book had on me. I recommend this book for caregivers everywhere. If ever there was a super advocate for the patient she was caring for, Bobbi Carducci is that person. -------Marian A. I expected horrible situations. Well, nothing was horrible, but the situations got pretty bad sometimes. For seven years, as an in-home caregiver to her father-in-law, Rodger, a man with a host of mental and physical ailments, Bobbi learned to do it her way – and Rodger’s way. This book tells how she did it. Her clever fixes to problems, fixes that dumbfounded me at times, worked for Rodger’s needs. Rodger was the sun around which she and Mike’s lives revolved. This is also a love story between a husband and wife trying to stay strong and support each other. They accomplished it, but not without dealing with strife and anger. This book moved me from tears to laughter to compassion. This book is all about Rodger; this book is all about Bobbi; this book is all about Mike. Bobbi has somehow plaited these three lives into an amazing story of caregiving.

"This is a brutally honest portrayal of caring for someone with mental illness and dementia.  An unpredictable roller coaster ride, Carducci describes her dramatic journey with love, humor and humility." Donna Thomson, Author The Four Walls of My Freedom

This story brought tears to my eyes so many times. Bobbi's words told of her genuine care and love for her father-in-law. I found myself identifying with her by thinking of my own struggles caring for my mother. Her words were honest but at the same time kind. I can't wait to share this book with my caregiver's support group! Thank you! Bev Antwine, Caregiver
