Overview

Connections is a collection of Pattie Palmer-Baker's vibrant poetry and artwork. Each poem is accompanied by an image of her layered and complex collages. The medium is paste paper, a 17th century decorated-paper technique which allows the artist to create highly textured surfaces with vibrant color shifts. After applying a mixture of colors and artist-made paste on wet paper, Palmer-Baker uses various tools, such as broad-nibbed calligraphy pens, to create patterns, designs and images. During the final step, she adds metallic pigment and/or gold leaf to increase the richness of the surface. Once dried, the paper is then cut into shapes and images to illuminate and extend the content of the poem.

About the Author

Pattie Palmer Baker exhibits widely in the Portland area and surrounding environs. She was a founding member of the Talisman Gallery and for many years has been involved with Portland Open Studios, a local high interest, city-wide event. She participates in on-going literary criticism classes and continues to create her dazzling paste paper collages that include her evocative poetry in calligraphic form.
