About the Author

ALAN M. REES is professor emeritus of library and information science at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and has taught at the University of Toronto, State University of New York at Albany, and Kent State University. He is a medical information specialist and author of numerous reference works, including Managing Consumer Health Information, Consumer Health Information Source Book, Personal Health Reporter, and the Encyclopedia of Health Information Sources. Professor Rees is also editor of Consumer Health USA (Volume 1, 1995 and Volume 2, 1997). He currently provides consumer health information services to several database producers and managed care organizations.

Rees (emeritus, SLIS, Case Western Reserve Univ.) has done it again with this source, which belongs on your reference shelf next to his other classics: The Consumer Health Information Source Book (Oryx, 1994) and Personal Health Reporter (LJ 3/15/93). Consumer Health USA reprints 151 federal government publications that provide answers to many of the most commonly asked questions by the public. Patient versions of clinical practice guidelines produced by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research are included along with the publications of other major federal institutions such as the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control. The volume is arranged by body systems, with additional chapters on AIDS, allergies, and women's health, and document sources and publication numbers are included. Good cross references within the text to additional titles of similar interest supplement the detailed subject index and separate title index. Completing the collection is a reprint of the National Library of Medicine's Health Hotlines with addresses and toll-free numbers for agencies that provide free consumer health information. Most of the publications of the National Institutes of Health and the Public Health Service are not indexed in the "Monthly Catalog". "The NIH Publications List" is not always current, accurate, or complete. Since these valuable sources are useful for patrons seeking medical information, making them accessible is important. "Consumer Health USA" does this This new source compiles 151 consumer health-information documents produced by various departments of NIH, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Public Health Service. The full text is provided, but space considerations have limited illustrations to only those essential to understanding the text. The documents are arranged in chapters by subject (e.g., AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, genetic disorders, women's health). Topics include various cancers, unstable angina, depression, and anabolic steroids. The source of the document is listed at the end of the text. Agency addresses and publication numbers are provided for some of the items. "See also" references offer access to related material. Subject and title indexes are followed by appendixes explaining the Physicians Data Query (PDQ) cancer information system and providing directories of health hotlines and state agencies on aging "Consumer Health USA" is an extremely useful source because it offers a great deal of accessible information in one place. The subjects covered are encountered daily in reference work. Small libraries and those without access to depository collections will definitely want to add this book. Patient-education and public library collections will appreciate it too.
