Like Kiss the Frog, McGill Manring Stevens is a fusion supergroup comprised of players who kept encountering each other at gigs and session dates before deciding to join forces. Comprised of bassist Michael Manring
, guitarist Scott McGill
, and drummer Vic Stevens
, the band's second album, Controlled by Radar
, is a sprawling two-disc affair. Organized into two discs -- one electric ("right brain") and one acoustic ("left brain") -- the music dives and turns all over the map, held together only by their virtuosity. Occasionally, the fretless bass, swirling guitars, classical-style acoustic guitar, and new agey textures become a little too light, but -- for the most part -- the band keeps things quite interesting over the discs' 22 tracks.
