Rain at last. Much-needed rain the weathermen called it. Rain, drummed the little houses skyrocketing in value in Cupertino and Sunnyvale. Much-needed rain darkened the red tile roofs of Stanford, and puddled Palo Alto's leafy streets. On the coast, the waves were molten silver, rising and melting in the September storm. Bridges levitated, and San Francisco floated like a hidden fortress in the mist. Rain flattened the impatiens edging corporate lawns, and Silicon Valley shimmered. The world was bountiful, the markets buoyant. Reflecting pools brimmed to overflowing, and already the tawny hills looked greener. Like money, the rain came in a rush, enveloping the Bay, delighting forecasters, exceeding expectations, charging the air.
Two sisters met for dinner in the downpour. Emily had driven up from Mountain View to Berkeley in rush-hour traffic. Jess just biked over from her apartment. Emily carried an umbrella. Jess hadn't bothered.
"Look at you," said Emily.
"Mmm." Jess brushed the raindrops from her face. "I like it." University Avenue's stucco and glass storefronts were streaming. Runoff whooshed into the storm drains at her feet.
"You're getting soaked."
Jess swung her bike helmet by the straps. "I'm hydrating."
"Like a frog?"
"You don't have to be amphibian to hydrate through your skin."
"Get under the umbrella!"
Jess had a theory about everything, but her ideas changed from day to day. It was hard for Emily to remember whether her sister was primarily feminist or environmentalist, vegan or vegetarian. Did she eat fish, or nothing with a face? Uncertain, Emily let Jess choose the restaurant when they went out to dinner.
The two of them nibbled samosas at Udupi Palace, and Emily said, "I'm sorry I kept rescheduling."
"That's okay." It was two weeks past Jess's twenty-third birthday, and the restaurant with its paper place mats looked small and plain for a palace, but Jess didn't mind.
"Veritech has been insane," Emily explained, "and Jonathan was here. . . ."
"Oh, Jonathan was here," Jess echoed in a teasing voice. "What did you do with Jonathan?" She often took this tone about Emily's boyfriend. The longer the relationship went on, the more serious it seemed, the more she teased. Jess didn't like him.
"He was just here very briefly on his way to L.A.," Emily said. "The last couple of weeks have been-"
Jess interrupted, "I've been insane too."
"Really?" Emily realized she sounded too surprised and added, "Doing what?"
"I'm taking the Berkeley, Locke, Hume seminar, and logic, and philosophy of language. . . ." Jess paused to sip her mango lassi. "And working and leafleting."
"For Save the Trees. And I'm also taking Latin. I think I might be as busy as you."
Emily laughed. "No." She was five years older and five times busier. While Jess studied philosophy at Cal, Emily was CEO of a major data- storage start-up.
"We're filing," Emily explained.
"I know," Jess said in a long-suffering voice.
Jess was the only person in the world bored by the IPO, and Emily loved that about her. "I got you a present."
"Really? Where is it?"
"You'll see. It's in the car. I thought we could take it back to your place so you can try it on."
"Oh," Jess said cheerfully, which meant, "I don't mind that you got me clothes again."
"You wanted something else," Emily fretted.
"No, I didn't."
"No! Nothing specific. Maybe a horse. Or a houseboat. That would be nice. And a photographic memory for verb tables."
"Why are you taking Latin, anyway?"
"Language requirement," Jess said.
"But you know French."
"I don't really know French, and I need an ancient language too."
Emily shook her head. "That program seems like such a long haul."
"Compared to going public after two and a half years? It's true."
The sisters' voices were almost identical, laughing mezzos tuned in childhood to the same pitch and timbre. To the ear, they were twins; to the eye, nothing alike. Emily was tall and slender with her hair cropped short. She wore a pinstriped shirt, elegant slacks, tiny, expensive glasses. She was an MBA, not a programmer, and it showed. Magnified by her glasses, her hazel eyes were clever, guarded, and also extremely beautiful. Her features were delicate, her fingers long and tapered. She scarcely allowed her back to touch her chair, while Jess curled up with her legs tucked under her. Jess was small and whimsical. Her face and mouth were wider than Emily's, her cheeks rounder, her eyes greener and more generous. She had more of the sun and sea in her, more freckles, more gold in her brown hair. She would smile at anyone, and laugh and joke and sing. She wore jeans and sweaters from Mars Mercantile, and her hair . . . who knew when she'd cut it last? She just pushed the long curls off her face.
Jess leaned forward, elbow on the table, and rested her head on her hand. "So, Emily," she said. "What's it like being rich?"
Emily began to speak and then caught herself. "I don't know," she answered truthfully. "I haven't tried it yet."
They hoisted Jess's bike into Emily's car and drove to Durant with the hatchback open. "Look at that," Emily said. She'd lucked into a legal parking space.
Jess lived at the edge of campus, where fraternities sprang up in every style, from Tudor to painted gingerbread. To the north, the university rose into the hills. John Galen Howard's elegant bell tower overlooked eucalyptus groves and rushing streams, the faculty club built like a timbered hunting lodge, the painted warnings to cyclists on the cement steps: DISMOUNT. To the south, Jess's neighborhood boasted the best burrito in the city and the best hot dog in the known universe, Pegasus Books with its used fantasy and science fiction novels, People's Park, where bearded sojourners held congress at the picnic tables. Amoeba Music, Moe's, Shakespeare & Co. Buskers playing tom-toms, sidewalk vendors selling incense and tie-dyed socks. Students, tourists, dealers, greasy spoons of many nations.
Jess's building was Old Hollywood-hacienda style: stucco, red tile, and wrought iron. Sconces lit the entryway, where the mailboxes were set into the wall. Jess paused, looking for her mail key. "Oh, well," she said.
An elderly neighbor climbed the steps. "Hey, Mrs. Gibbs, how are you?" said Jess, unlocking and holding the door open. "Do you remember my sister Emily?"
"We have not had the pleasure." Mrs. Gibbs was a petite black woman with freckles on her nose, and she wore a white nurse's uniform under her black raincoat. White dress, white stockings, green rubber boots. Mrs. Gibbs placed her hand on Emily's head. "May you always be a blessing."
"That was strange," Emily whispered as Jess led the way up the stairs.
"She's a friend."
"What do you mean, 'friend'?" Jess tended to collect people. She was friendly to a fault. She went through little fascinations, and easily fancied herself in love. "Do you actually know that woman?" Emily's voice echoed in the stairwell. "Does she usually put her hands on people's heads?"
Jess held open the door to her apartment, a real find, despite the rattling pipes and cracked tile in the bathroom. Eleven-foot ceilings, plasterwork like buttercream, closets deep enough to sublet. "She's lived in the building for, like, thirty years," said Jess, as if that explained everything.
Her roommates Theresa and Roland lolled on the couch watching Wuthering Heights on Masterpiece Theatre. Theresa was studying comparative literature and writing a dissertation that had something to do with migration, borders, and margins. She'd grown up in Honolulu but couldn't swim. Roland was lanky and wore pleated pants and a dress shirt and gold-rimmed glasses; he worked as a receptionist in the dean's office.
"Hey," said Jess.
Roland held up a warning finger. "Shh."
Jess led her sister into her bedroom. The walls were lined with overloaded Barnes & Noble folding birch bookcases. Piles of sweaters and Save the Trees leaflets filled a papasan chair. A battered wood table from the street served as desk for an ancient IBM desktop computer. On the wall hung a framed Ansel Adams poster, the black-and- white image of a glistening oak coated and crackling with ice. On her bulletin board, Jess had pinned photos of their father, Richard, and his wife Heidi and their little girls, Lily and Maya.
"Maybe you should dry off before you try on the . . ." Emily was rummaging in her shopping bag as Jess peeled off her socks and her damp sweater. "I have something else in here for you." She produced a thick prospectus.
"Initial Public Offering for Veritech Corporation, Sunnyvale," Jess read off the cover.
"Right. You should read all of that. And also these." Emily handed Jess a wad of papers. "This is our Friends and Family offering. You fill this out and send a check here." She pointed to an address.
"You're eligible to buy one hundred shares at eighteen dollars a share. So you need to mail in a check for eighteen hundred dollars."
Jess grinned in disbelief. "Eighteen hundred dollars?"
"No, no, no, you have to do this," Emily said. "After the IPO, the price will go through the roof. Daddy's buying. Aunt Joan is buying. . . ."
"Maybe they can buy some for me too."
"No, this is important. Stop thinking like a student."
"I am a student."
"Just leave that aside for the moment, okay? Follow the directions. You'll do really, really well."
"How do you know?"
"Have you heard of Priceline?"
Jess shook her head as Emily rattled off the names of companies that had gone public in 1999. The start-ups had opened at sixteen dollars, thirty-eight dollars, and were now selling for hundreds of dollars a share. "Just read the material, and mail the check. . . ."
"But I don't have eighteen hundred dollars," Jess reminded her sister.
"All right, will you lend me eighteen hundred dollars?"
Emily lost patience. "If you'd just temporarily give up your aversion to money . . ."
"I don't have an aversion to money," Jess said. "I don't have any. There's a big difference."
"I don't think you understand what I'm giving you," said Emily. "I get only ten on my Friends and Family list."
"So it's sort of an honor," said Jess.
"It's sort of an opportunity. Please don't lose this stuff. You have ten days to take care of this. Just follow through, okay?"
"If you insist." Emily's bossiness brought out the diva in Jess.
"Promise," Jess said. After which she couldn't help asking, "Do I still have to try on the clothes?"
"Here's the blouse, and the jacket. Here's the skirt." Emily straightened the blanket on Jess's unmade bed and sat on top.
The skirt was short, the jacket snug, and they were woven in a rust and orange tweed. The blouse was caramel silk with a strange lacquered finish, not just caramel but caramelized. Jess gazed for a moment at the three pieces. Then she stripped off the rest of her clothes and plunged in.
"Oh, they're perfect," said Emily. "They fit perfectly. Do you have a mirror?"
"Just in the bathroom."
"Here, brush your hair and tie it back. Or put it up. Go take a look."
Jess padded off to the bathroom and peeked at herself in the mirror, where she saw her own bemused face, more freckled than she remembered. The tweed jacket and the silk blouse reminded her of a game she and Emily had played when they were little. They called themselves Dress- Up Ladies and teetered through the house on high heels. Sometimes Emily would wear a satin evening gown, and pretend she was a bride. Then Jess would be the flower girl, with scarves tied around her waist. That was before their father gave away their mother's clothes.
"Can you see?" Emily called from the bedroom.
"It's really nice," Jess called back.
"It's a Vivienne Tam suit," said Emily when Jess returned.
"Thank you. I could tell by the . . . label." Jess sat down cautiously on her desk chair. Comically, experimentally, she tried crossing her legs.
"You hate it," Emily said.
"No! It's really very pretty." Jess was already undressing.
"Just say you'll wear it once."
"I'll wear it to your IPO." Jess pulled on a giant T-shirt and sweatpants.
"You aren't going to the IPO. It's not a wedding."
"Okay, I'll wear it to your wedding." Jess flopped onto the bed. "Don't you miss him?"
"We're used to it."
"I never would be," Jess declared, and added silently, Never in a million years. She would never deny herself the one she loved, or make excuses for him, either. She'd never say, It's complicated, or We have to be patient. Love was not patient. Love was not kind. It didn't keep; it couldn't wait. Not in her experience. Certainly not in her imagination.
"What did Dad and Heidi get you?" Emily asked.
"Just the tickets home for Thanksgiving. And they sent me pictures from the kids. See-Lily wrote her name, and a rainbow." Jess spread their half sisters' drawings over the bed. "I think these scribbles are from Maya. And I have Mom's letter here somewhere. . . ."
Their mother, Gillian, had passed away when Emily was ten and Jess was only five. Fighting breast cancer, suffering from long treatments, alternately hoping and despairing as the disease recurred, Gillian had cast about for ways to look after her daughters when she was gone. She'd then learned that some patients wrote letters to their children for their birthdays. Jess and Emily each had a set of sealed envelopes.
Jess pulled her letter from a stack of notebooks on the floor. "It's short." The letters got shorter and shorter. Reading them was hard, like watching their mother run out of air.
"Dear Jessie," Emily read aloud as she smoothed the creased paper, "I am trying to imagine you as a young lady, when all I see is a five- year-old girl waving her little legs in the air-that's the sign that you're tired. I imagine you with your hair untangled. Your sister tried to brush your hair this morning and you wouldn't let her. I wish you would." Emily paused a moment, sat up straighter on the bed and continued. "Surely by now you are embarking on a profession. If you have not yet embarked, please do!
"Ahem," said Emily.
"I have embarked!" Jess protested. "A doctoral program is embarking."
"She means working."
"Philosophy is work. And I also have a job." By this, Jess meant her part-time job at Yorick's, the rare-book store on Channing where she did her reading in the afternoons.
"I don't mean a job-" Emily read, and then stopped short. "She knew what you were going to say."
Jess giggled, because Emily treated the letters like such oracles.
"I don't mean a job. I am talking about a career, and a vocation. George Eliot wrote 'that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life'-but that was more than one hundred years ago. I'm hoping that you and your sister will set your sights a little higher." A little higher, Emily thought, as she placed the letter on the bed, and yet Gillian had been a mother, no more, no less. Would she have done more if she had lived? Much more? Or just a little?

The Cookbook Collector seems to have been written very rapidly. The author didn't take the time to develop the characters fully, therefore, I could not relate to any of them. I just didn't care about them..........nor did I find the plot to be very compelling. Don't waste time on this one.
This book was definitely one of the worst books I have ever read. It is slow moving, and at half way thru, I still don't know what the story is. Good character description,but there is no plot. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
I purchased this book b/c of the reviews (not the actual reader reviews) and am so sorry that I did. What a waste of my time and money. This was one of the most horrible books I have ever read. How can they even compare her to Jane Austen, especially after reading this book? The characters are boring, the plot is boring, there is no sense of consistency in the book and you have no timeline through the entire book. Reading a dictionary would be more interesting - and at least worth my time.
I purchased this book after finding it on an NPR book list. As the NPR and other reviews had hinted, this book is far more rich in character and theme than in plot. I found Emily and Jess, the two sisters who are the unifying characters of the novel, to be quite real and felt comfortable with them immediately. (I did think the environmental activist situation to be a little contrived, but it did not keep me from liking the characters.) The sisters' relationship and the relationships that touch each of them are the focus of the novel. In each relationship--sisters, partners, friends, lovers--the characters struggle to find the kind of happiness that will last. I enjoyed Goodman's treatment of this universal idea. I ended the novel no surer of a recipe for happiness than when I began my reading, but I had new ideas to think about. I, personally, often like that open-ended thought-provoking ending much better than a neatly packaged solution.
I think the author needed to put the book together fast and forgot to put it in order. I would get into the story of one character when it will jump into another. Years and months passed from one page to another without keeping the characters tied in the story line. I was very frustrated and could not wait to finish it. Sad because the plot sounded interesting for a moment.
I finally had to give up on this book. The characters were not well developed and frankly, some of them were quite annoying. The story line was very slow and just never seemed to go anywhere.
My husband got me this book because it was reviewed on NPR. It is an easy, enjoyable read.
Wow - quite a book! The story starts out about 2 sisters, Emily and Jessamine. Emily is the oldest, smart and responsible she has life all figured out and is on the cusp of huge success with a startup, software company and in a serious relationship with her steady boyfriend. Jessamine is the flighty, younger sister still trying to find her way. She hops from one boyfriend to another and one cause to another, looking for a way to do good in the world. A simplistic synopsis for a deeply complicated, real, and honest book. This story is about sisters, dreams, and growing up. Its about wild dreams, heartbreaking devastation, and as the dust jacket so clearly states "it is about holding on to what is real in a virtual world: love that stays." Phew! This was, wow!, quite a book for me. The first 2/3 of the book were, honestly, boring. I'm not in the software world and I didn't pay much attention to the dot.com boom when it was happening. I don't understand the mind set of the kind of people who lost it all in crazy start-up schemes, so I just wasn't really interested in those parts. Jessamine was mildly more interesting, but it didn't seem like she was ever going to get her act together. Then, all the sudden, it started to catch my interest. As an unexpected love story began to bloom I found myself unable to put it down. Then the big climax came to a head and I was literally riveted, desperate to know the plot would shake out and where the characters would end up! In the end, the book was so real, with flawed people and life turning surprising corners just when you had it figured out. A beautifully written novel about finding your path in life where you least expect it.
The author did plenty of research to make the story real and timely. Well crafted plots that interweave the theme of rare book collecting with chance encounters, cross-country family connections, and the impending financial and social disasters in the fall of 2000 keep the reader puzzled, but entertained. The literary references alone are worth the read, but are not intrusive into the story telling. I particulary enjoyed the descriptions of the Maybeck architecture versus the MacMansions on the East coast and the descriptive visits to Cambridge, MA evidenced some real time spent on foot in that town. When everything connects the threads at the end, it becomes more than just a good read -it morphs into a cleverly disguised mystery novel. I'm looking forward to the author's next novel with curiosity - what theme this time?
I found this story difficult to get into mainly because I couldn't get interested in the main characters. At times also the writing seemed trite. Not fast paced enough either. Basically not my cup of tea.
This book received so many favorable reviews, I did not want to wait for it to be issued in soft cover form. I should have saved my money. I found the characters to be two-dimensional, at best, and somewhat annoying. I don't like to detail plot parts in a review because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but there is a story line that was a little far-fetched and coincidental. The writing style is ok. But the book was a huge disappointment
The group I belong to enjoyed the book and had diverse opinions about what everyone's favorite parts were. All agreed on doing away with Jonathan!
I found this to be a very interesting book and an unusual topic which was well written and such that you could readily visualize the settings. Any book lover would enjoy this offering.
I started out thinking this would be an intertaining novel about two very differnt sisters, but the book spends to much time following too many people that weave in and out of the sisters lives. By page 40 or so I wondered why I had downloaded it to my Nook, and where the book was really going,and what was the point of the book? I am glad that I read it from overdrive and can send it back whenever I get done skimming it, maybe it has a purpose, I will find it if it does.
I was invested in the characters and relationships between them.
Sisters Emily and Jess lost their mother when at a young age. Now as adults they¿ve chosen completely different life styles. Emily is the co-founder of a successful dotcom business. Jess is an eternal student, working in a bookstore and campaigning for eco rights in Berkley. The characters and premise are interesting, but the problem is Goodman can¿t decide whose story she wants to tell. She starts with the two sisters, but she quickly gets side tracked by their friends, family, lovers, co-workers at the dotcom company and bookstore, etc. Soon she¿s juggling so many story lines that it¿s hard to care about any of them. Just as you would get interested in one plot, the story would abruptly switch over to a completely unrelated group of people. We kept leaving the sisters¿ stories and going into everyone else¿s lives. First it was Emily¿s boyfriend Jonathan and his dotcom company with his friend Orion. Then it was Orion¿s crush on a co-worker, then Jess¿ new boss George, then a rabbi that Jess meets; you see how things could get a bit muddled. I also was not a fan of the title. One of the many subplots follows a woman who is selling her deceased uncles¿ rare collection of cookbooks, but that wasn¿t even one of the main story lines. It made me think the book was about a homemaker and her love for baking or something and I don¿t think it fit the book at all. Frankly I think I would have enjoyed the entire book a lot more if the software companies¿ plots had been completely axed. The most interesting story lay with Jess (not her tree hugging tendencies) and her relationship with her sister, the bookstore where she worked and George. Unfortunately there were too many distracting subplots. I think it would have made a better short story collection. There were some wonderful characters, they just needed their own space to shine. BOTTOM LINE: It was off to a good start, but the novel loses itself when it tries to tell too many stories at once. I would be willing to try something else by the author in the hopes that her future work is a bit more focused.
Emily and Jess Bach are about as different as two sisters can be. Emily, in her late twenties, is secure, successful, and ambitious, with a start-up high-tech company, Veritech, that is about to go public and make her very wealthy. Jess, about five years younger, is a free spirit, a mostly vegan graduate student in philosophy at Berkeley whose true passion is saving the trees, and who works in a rare-books store to earn a bit of cash. ¿The Cookbook Collector¿ is the story of Emily and Jess, and the people whose lives intersect with theirs, during a three-year period at the turn of the 21st century. But ¿The Cookbook Collector¿ is also a story of the timeless experiences of betrayal, of love, and of redemption. From Goodman¿s almost matter-of-fact account of Emily and Jess¿ stories there emerge moments that are deeply sad and others that are wonderfully joyous. It¿s a book to be savored.
This book begins in the final months of the twentieth century. Technology companies are growing like crazy, and those on the ground floor are becoming millionaires - at least on paper - as the companies go public. Emily Bach, the CEO of Veritech, celebrates her IPO (initial public offering) in California, while her boyfriend Jonathan prepares for his in Cambridge, MA. But not everyone is wrapped up in the business boom. Emily's sister Jessamine is a graduate student in philosophy, dates an activist, and works for a rare book collector. As these disparate threads weave together, I found myself mildly interested in how each character would face challenges to their identities, but I wasn't captivated. I wasn't really engaged in the story until about 100 pages from the end - until the story shifted from gains and losses on paper to gains and losses that were much more real. It was in this final quarter of the book that the characters were pushed from their comfort zones and their decisions became much more interesting.
This is the first book I've read by Goodman and I will definitely be checking out others in the future. She's a fine writer and this is a great story!
This book is completely not what the title, cover image, or some of the write-ups suggests. I picked it up because I enjoy cooking and have quite a collection of cookbooks. My second reason was that some reviewers likened to books to Jane Austen - a favorite author. Unfortunately, this book has very little to do with either. It actually ended up being about the dot com rise and fall and other historic events surrounding that time periods. There is a cookbook collector in the book, but still!
This is an ambitious novel that was very well reviewed. It is very well-crafted. It is partly a comedy of manners and courtship inspired by Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility." It is therefore blessed with two pleasing main characters with whom we already feel half-acquainted. The younger sister (here, Jess) is particularly charming and delightful.The book also manages a very knowing, and judgmental, portrait of the late 1990s dot.com boom. Again, we already know how that story ends, but that is comforting when the telling is so pitch perfect. It gives a really great portrait of the world of the young successful technology entrepreneur. And it even manages to be a September 11 novel, believe it or not. In fact, that's not all. It also delves into rare-book collecting, cooking, environmental activism, a Hasidic Jewish sect, Berkeley, California and Cambridge, Massachusetts. It's flaw, perhaps, is that is the book tries to be so all-encompassing. There are so many characters, with so many plots and sub-plots, and so much sociological description, that it sometimes felt too full.
It took me a while to get into this book. There seemed to be two totally separate stories and I had a hard time figuring out why the author didn't just go ahead and write two books. But, by the end, I could see the connection. How do we grow up, find out about who we are - not just who people think we are - and discover our own ways of happiness. The plot seems to ramble all over the place, which slows it down sometimes when it shouldn't be, but the characters are likable and drew in my interest, although there were an awful lot of them. I enjoyed the roller-coaster ride of the dot-com businesses, the days of instant millionaires and frenetic IPOs. Not my favorite, but worthwhile reading from the library.
I read this book in one day. I haven't done that for a while, and it wasn't a case of not having other things to do.Relationships are at the heart of The Cookbook Collector: siblings, friends, romantic partners. Jess and Emily are sisters, and complete opposites. For the most part, they accept and yet resent each other, not understanding (or wanting to understand) what drives the other. Their mother died when they were young, and Emily takes after their father-- smart, analytical, and driven. Jess is also smart, but her interests are softer and more varied, and she's not in a hurry to settle down and commit to a career.Emily is a young CEO of a Silicon Valley high tech company, in a relationship with Jonathan, launching his own company on the east coast. Both are on the countdown to an IPO, worrying about future success of their companies. For all they have in common, they are very different people, and the book watches as they try to figure out their lives can work together.Jess collects people, and it was interesting watching her pop in and out of conversations with her then boyfriend, her roommates, a neighborhood rabbi, the owner of the rare books bookstore where she works. It's never clear how the pieces of her life will tie together, but for her, everything really is interconnected.Add in Berkeley tree sitters, the nitty gritty of high tech life, book collecting, the dynamics of many different families, and more.I really enjoyed the book, but had a few issues with it.I expected to see more of Silicon Valley, but more of the action was in Berkeley. I suspect that's a more interesting setting for most people, but I was hoping to see more of the streets I know. But that's just me.With all of the people involved in Emily and Jess's lives, and in the lives of those people as well, there were points where I was having trouble keeping track of secondary character names. I think that is the one weakness of the book. It contains many stories, all worth telling, but in telling them all, the core is weakened.All in all, a good read, and one I'll keep thinking about.
"The Cookbook Collector" follows the lives of two sisters, Emily and Jess, between 1999 and 2002 as they seek out purpose and love in the heady dot-com era of the late 90s. Althought the sisters are close, they have little in common--Emily is the CEO of a high flying tech startup, Veritech, while Jess is studying for her PhD in Philosophy at Berkley and working part time at a used bookstore. Both young women are exploring love, friendship, and wealth, and the combination of the three that can make you truly happy in life. As the high flying tech bubble finally crashes to an end with the events of 9/11, the two sisters will have to decide what is really important in life. I really, really enjoyed this book, even though it didn't turn out to be quite the "Sense and Sensibility for the New Millenium" it was billed as. Author Allergra Goodman would spend a couple of chapters telling the story from the point of view of a particular character--including both sisters, their boyfriends, and even employees at the tech startups--a technique which really allowed me to get into the heads of these characters and get emotionally involved with their different stories. There are lots of characters and lots of stories, many of which are very, very different from each other, but Goodman does a masterful job of weaving them all together. She also does a good job of working 9/11 into the plot of her story in a meaningful way, instead of simply throwing it in as much recent fiction has done. This book was powerful, and I think it will be remembered as one of the best of the year.
This was a pleasant surprise - I didn't expect anything as deep as the story presented here. At first, I was impatient. The beginnings of the book were all about the relationship (such as it was) between two sisters who appear on the surface to be as different as apples and artichokes. It was about the dot-com industry and greed, and people making enough money to finance a third world nation for several years. I kept waiting for the cookbook part...and waiting...at page 61, we finally got to a collector, but it took until page 162 to get some of the meat of the cookbook collection.I was also fascinated by the similarity to another book I'd read recently - The Color of Water, in which the mother was disinherited by Jewish parents. In this one the mother died when the girls were quite young, and the father has remarried and has pre-school twins. Each of the older sisters is dealing with a romance that the reader may perceive as inappropriate and there are several peripheral relationships and stories going on in addition to the gorgeous story of the ancient, large, and eclectic cookbook collection which one of the sisters, Jess is hired to catalog. The story of the books, the notes, the inserts, and the recipes themselves is just so much fun. The plot could be called the standard boy meets girl, boy likes girl, girl has other love interests, yada, yada, yada. But the character development is much deeper than that and watching the love relationships of both the sisters is by far the best part of the book. Imagine, a double romance with social studies, environmental issues, rare books, Jewish studies, women's relationships, high finance, and genealogy in addition to marvelous recipes. It's a very satisfying book.
