Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A frantic six days of feline mischief conclude with a fervent hope for the seventh in this winsome selection. Ages 1-5. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
What a delightful way to learn the days of the week. Cookie is a cat that just cannot stay out of trouble. On Monday Cookie falls in the toilet and there is water everywhere. On Wednesday Cookie upsets the trash can and there is garbage everywhere, and so it goes until Sunday when it looks like Cookie might have a peaceful day. DePaola's wonderful watercolors show this mischievous cat and all the mayhem. Sometimes it is just her tail, a paw, or both, but there is no doubt about what this curious cat is up to. The set up is great. The first spread names the day and what Cookie does. The second one shows the result of Cookie's action. Based on a picture book, this story and its illustrations make an excellent transition to board book form. 2004 (orig. 1988), Putnam, Ages 2 to 5.

Meet the Author

Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. His determination to create books for children led to a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California. It drove him through the years of teaching, designing greeting cards and stage sets, and painting church murals until 1965, when he illustrated his first children's book, Sound, by Lisa Miller for Coward-McCann. Eventually, freed of other obligations, he plunged full time into both writing and illustrating children's books.

Tomie dePaola has published almost 200 children's books in fifteen different countries. He remains one of the most popular creators of books for children, receiving more than 100,000 fan letters each year.

Tomie lives in an interesting house in New Hampshire with his four dogs. His studio is in a large renovated 200-year-old barn.

I used to read this book all the time when I was in the second grade and I loved everytime I went to the library I would check it out but when I moved I couln't ever find this book but then I searched for it on AOL and I finally found it and I still to this day love to read this book to little kids that I babysit and they love it too.
