About the Author

Bestselling Author Karen Docter writes two different kinds of romance novels...

Contemporary Romance w/a Karen Docter: Romance...With a Kick!

Romantic Suspense w/a K.L. Docter: Women hunted by who'd die to protect them.

Karen's contemporaries are delightful, spicy romances. She loves writing about real men and women with dreams and goals that don't allow for a relationship just so she can throw them in each others path.

Her romantic suspense novels (as K.L. Docter) are also filled with romance, although the dangers the hero and heroine face are intense, usually because a serial killer is bent on ending one or both of their lives before they can fall in love.

Karen/K.L.'s an award-winning author, a four-time Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart® finalist, and won the coveted Kiss of Death Romance Writers Daphne du Maurier Award Category (Series) Romantic Mystery Unpublished division.

When she's not saving her characters from death and destruction or helping them to fall in love, she loves camping and fishing with her family, reading, gardening & cooking. If she can do most of those things over a campfire, all the better!

A very nice romance. The characters are likable although Carrie was mildly annoying at times, her son is cute, and Jake is hot! The story is well-written and managed to hold my attention. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Carrie Padilla lost her husband when he was shot by police in a bank robbery gone wrong. Jake Stafani, a S.W.A.T. member feels responsible for losing a young boy to gang violence. Forced to take a leave of absence from the force after a close call, Jake finds Carrie’s son, Eric, about to vandalize his house for an initiation into what he thinks might be a gang. Jake brings Eric home to his mom only to feel a strong pull to Carrie. This is a cute short story that is very well written. The story had depth and dealt with serious and real issues. I enjoyed this story and felt it had only one thing holding this back from being a 5 star read for me. It was so obvious Jake and Carrie belonged together but Carrie was held captive by the past with losing her husband to a police officer that she wouldn’t let Jake all the way in. I don’t mind a little push and pull in a story but Carrie kept Jake at arm’s length until the end. I would have enjoyed more of them together and I would have really enjoyed an epilogue. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Cop On Her Doorstep is my first book by Karen Docter. I enjoyed it! Cop On Her Doorstep is a well written book. I loved the characters. Ms Docter has provided plenty of drama, suspense, humor and sizzle. I liked this book and look forward to reading more from Karen Docter in the future. Cop On Her Doorstep is book 1 of the True Love In Uniform Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Carrie's husband was killed by S.W.A.T. six years ago and left her with their little son. Six years later, she opens her front door to a cop with her son in tow. Jake comes home from work to find a couple of boys in his yard ready to do some damage to his property. Turns out that Eric is a great kid and isn't really ready for a life of crime, but Jake is instantly in love with Eric's mom. Carrie has a big hang up about cops, and S.W.A.T. in particular. She finds that she is falling in love with Jake, but can she get past the fact that he puts himself in danger every day. He may get hurt and leave her just like everyone else in her life has done. Can they find a middle ground?

I got this book from Netgalley and since I had never read a book by Ms. Docter, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have to say I really enjoyed the book. Carrie is a widow with an 8 year old, Eric. She lost her husband 6 years ago when he was at a bank during a robbery and was killed by friendly fire. She has since have a dislike of police officers and all they represent. Jake is a SWAT team member put on leave, after an incident in his last call. They meet when Eric was breaking in Jake’s property. The story shows the struggles of Carrie as she is unable to handle Jake’s job, and Jake, trying to show her that she is a strong woman that can handle anything. A story worth reading. You will find family struggles, strong honorable men, and a woman falling in love. I will look forward to another book by Ms. Docter.

Thank you Karen Docter and Net Galley for allowing me access to this wonderful book. This was a very sweet read full of humor, romance, caring, and all good things! The main characters Carrie and Jake are well defined and the interaction between them ranges from funny and sensual and sparks fly everywhere throughout the story. There is also a touching relationship between Carrie's son Eric and Jake that became close to my heart because my son grew up without a Dad in his life. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that is heartfelt, feel good, and will make you smile.

When you lose someone you care so much about it becomes easy for your mind to change the facts that you know into something that makes you doubt everything and blame those who don't deserve it. Carrie lost her husband after a bank robbery where SWAT was called in. Now she distrusts all cops but when one shows up on her doorstep with her son in toe all of her preconceived notions are put to the test. Jake puts family and duty above all else until that is he meets his new neighbor Carrie, but will his feelings for her be able to last through all of the challenges they face. This was a great romance story about overcoming your personal fears.

Carrie has spent the last six years picking up the pieces of her life. The only thing that has really kept her grounded was her son, Eric, after her husband died in a bank robbery gone wrong. She doesn't trust cops since the day her husband died. She's built a bubble around her son and herself. That is until a cop show up at her doorsteps with her son in tow. Jake has been "requested" to take a month vacation after a drug bust gone wrong. His first day on vacation and he catches someone trespassing on his property. Comes to find out that it's a little boy, Eric, doing a dare to get the older boys in school to like him. So when he takes the boy home, he leaves more than just Eric there. They both are attracted to each other. Carrie is trying to avoid it. Jake wants to see where things lead. Can he convince Carrie to give them a chance? Or she is so far in her bubble that there is no way out for her? This is my first time anything by this author and I really enjoyed reading this book. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. The book was very well written and the story line flowed beautifully. I could hardly put the book down. I recommend this book to others to read. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the author via NetGalley.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review: Carrie, a young widow, is haunted by the death of her husband, even six years after the fact. She does her best to provide everything that her son could need... except bring a man into their family. When the new hot neighbor turns out to be a cop, Carrie fights her attraction to him, reminding herself that a cop was responsible for her husband's death. Jake lost one young neighbor boy to gang violence and carries that guilt with him. So when his new neighbor's boy attempts vandalism, Jake steps in to guide the child down correct paths in life and not into roads that could lead to senseless violence, gang life and death. But he never expected to be so attracted to the boy's mom, a woman who seems haunted and even terrified by his uniform. Carrie admits she needs a positive role model for her son, and Jake needs to assuage his guilt over the last case by compensating with this neighbor's child. Both find themselves dealing with who they are, who they were, and who they'd like to be. I truly enjoyed Cop on Her Doorstep. It unfolded quite naturally, with bits and pieces being revealed as the characters grew closer and shared more of themselves. The sexual tension sizzled throughout the story, and their attraction was quite obvious. The author did a great job of making Carrie's angst and turmoil churn as she worked through her complex feelings for Jake. The love scenes were a wonderful combination of both sweet and hot. The only thing I would prefer more is sticking to one point of view per chapter; although this author offered many seamless shifts between the hero's and heroine's point of view, some scenes threw me off and I had to reread the paragraph to see whose head the viewpoint was in. Overall, this was a beautiful story, perfect for someone who wants to read about a tender yet alpha male, one who can turn off his job after punching the clock and become the loving husband and father that we all so enjoy reading.

Carrie looks out the peephole to a man who makes her heart race, for more than one reason. Still dealing with the death of her husband, killed by S.W.A.T, who shows up at her door, her young son in tow? Jake Stefani is a gorgeous officer who wants to make her rethink her dislike of men in uniform.  I truly enjoyed reading the story of these two as they found a way to compromise between her anguished memories and his beloved career. Plus, Jake's relationship with young Eric, Carrie's son who is trying to grow up far too fast, is so sweet. It would make me fall even harder for Jake, if I were Carrie.  This is a truly enjoyable read. I am very grateful that I received a copy of this to review. This is a book that I would pick up and read again. I highly recommend it!

The story is beautifully told and follows our lead female Carrie and her neighbor Jake. Plus, the relationship between Carrie's son and Jake. By reading the other reviews you can get more detailed storyline but I like to keep it short and sweet. Wonderful book, Wonderful characters, Wonderful Story. Carrie Padilla , widowed mother of an 8 year old son looked out the peephole to see a cop on her doorstep, its only the crack of dawn and she has a deep seeded reason to panic when ever she sees a cop so she won't open the door till he shows the identification she has asked for. As she opens the door to the officer, Jake Stefani , her panic doesn't stop her from noticing his warm brown eyes and muscular build. then out from behind the officer steps her son who she thought was asleep upstairs and oh no he has a guilty look on his face. This is really a four and a half star captivating read. The relationship between the boy and the cop was heartwarming and fun to watch it build, and the feelings of angst between Carrie and Jake kept me turning the pages.
