Three things make billionaire Jim Halcyon's to-do list: women, work...and more women. It's a perfect agenda for a rich shifter who has no problem letting his inner grizzly out to play. From the bright lights of Vegas, to the sophisticated action of New York—he's got the money and the power to do anything he wants.

Anything, except resist the lure of Lady Luck, an ancient copper coin he gambles yearly to possess. Jim is determined to regain control of the pretty penny, and damn if he'll let any bit of eye candy distract him from his goal. Not even the mesmerizing woman in the middle of the casino floor with the shimmering hair and enormous green eyes.

With a life-changing move ahead of her, Lillie's finagled a temporary layover en route to her future. She's got five days to soak in new experiences, and while Vegas is too big and shiny and loud for her shy bear self, she's eager to do this up right. It's the last chance she's got to let her hair down.

Until his challenge begins, Jim is more than willing to oblige Lillie's wish for a final fling. Only Lady Luck has some twists of fate planned for them both...

3.5 Stars Reviewed by Francesca and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog I’ve always been a fan of Vivian Arend’s shifter stories because they are fun and entertaining. We originally got to know the Takhini Wolves and in the last book, MOON SHINE, we also got to know the bears. I’m pretty excited that we are delving into more from this world in this spin off series and can’t wait to read more about them! So think of COPPER KING as the billionaire shifter story. Jim is rich, successful in his own right, and maybe sometimes a bit too uptight. That’s why he can count on his best friend Damon (a wolf) to shake things up a bit. Every year they figure out an over the top way of determining who wins a certain lucky coin for the year. Except this year, Jim might’ve found something more important to invest his time in than competing for a coin. Where Ms. Arend’s wolves have fated mates and that pull is instant and undeniable, bears don’t. So when Jim meets Lillie it’s the attraction that calls to him. And after they spend time together, it’s a genuine ease of being together. I kind of like this a lot because as much as I love reading about fated mates, sometimes that can be a bit too much insta love for me. I really like to let them develop those feelings naturally as well. So this was a nice change of pace for these stories. (Hint hint, more bears!!!) Jim is attentive, possessive and sometimes overbearing (get it?). He takes over Lillie’s life in just a few days. Lillie on the other hand has always been a little sheltered. She’s not too sure of herself, a bit of a recluse. She has a rebel side but it was always squashed down by her family. And now she’s on the run from something, hiding a secret, and that’s when she meets Jim. Her one last wild ride of freedom, or so she thought. I think their personalities complemented each other very well. The story was short but it packed enough romance to keep me completely satisfied. The ending was a bit rushed to the “I love yous” but I liked how the author ended it otherwise. Yes, I did see that coming all the way from almost the beginning but that didn’t take away from enjoying the story. Damon as a side character provided so much entertainment! He’s the wild friend, the one that maybe throws caution to the wind sometimes, the fun player one. I cannot wait to read his book next!

Quickie Anyone?? I normally am not a fan of novellas, I prefer longer reads with the time to develop and become invested in the characters and their world however if it’s fast paced, well written and hot then I’ll fit a quickie in!  For those who don’t know, “quickie” is the term given to a sexual romp that is exactly that – quick. It is to the point, exciting and usually quite intense. And it’s often more animalistic and lust-driven than regular ‘romantic’ sex. ‘Copper King’ is shifters so the animalistic and lust driven is pretty much a given but as it’s also a Vivian Arend you know it will be fast, furious, hot as f*ck and leave you satiated and happy…… Ms Arend delivers as usual with the story of Jim and Lillie, they are just perfect together from the very first meeting and even though it’s a novella the author manages to tell a sweet, romantic story with a sensual erotic touch that will satisfy every parawhore out there with a soft spot for a good shifter story. Jim is a grizzly bear so ** swoon ** he’s a large alpha shifter more than capable of sweeping a shy black bear off her feet and into his bed. Keeping her there may not be as easy! But an interesting twist made for a satisfying and surprising ending. Damon (Jim’s BF) was fabulous comic relief, this combined with a flowing story, some hot steamy scenes and a couple you can’t help but love and ‘Copper King’ was a winner for me.

I very much enjoyed reading this story. I like the paranormal shifter stories, and this one although short was very good. I look forward to more stories in this series. Vivian Arend has never disappointed me in any of her shifter stories, I have liked them all.

When I picked up this book I figured it would be a quick read from a new author I haven’t heard of before. I was so surprised that even halfway through the book, I didn’t want the story to end and I wanted to get the other books by this author in the future. If they can write this great of a short story, I can’t wait to find out what they can do with a full length novel. The one thing I really enjoyed about the book was the sense of mystery about it. You could tell that Lillie was hiding something, but you couldn’t figure out what exactly was going on. As you get further into the story and you watch as Jim and Lillie have feelings for each other, you can’t help but to wonder what will happen when Lillie’s secret is revealed. I can say that the twist is one that insane and caught me completely off guard. It was that hidden of a twist that was extremely well done by the author. One big thing that I really did like is that even though this is a paranormal book, it wasn’t taken over by that. Granted, there are a lot of paranormal things happening during the story, it didn’t take over. But being able to watch as Jim and Lillie were able to get to know each other as humans, was really great to read about. My only complaint about the whole story would be Damon. I can’t wait to find out more about him. I was hoping there was going to be more about him in this story, but I do understand why they didn’t put a lot about him in there. I would say that if you’re looking for a quick paranormal read, you should really check this book out because it’s really worth it. 'I received a copy of this book from the Publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review' Jim is a bear shifter who's life is work and women. While he is on a vacation of sorts in Vegas with his best friend Damon who is a wolf shifter, he meets Lillie who is another bear shifter. Lillie is in Vegas for one last fling. She knows her destiny and she is fine with it, but she is determined to have some fun first. Once Jim see's Lillie, he doesn't want her out of his sight which he feels is odd but he will worry about that later. He has a race against Damon in a couple days to focus on, he doesn't need a woman distracting him. He knows that Lillie is keeping something from him. He doesn't know what but he's not too worried about it. Once he realizes he has feelings for her it may be too late as the agency he hired to find him a bride called and mentioned that they found someone for him. My Opinion: I loved this book and I loved Jim and Lillie together. This is the first book that I have read from this author and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely read more from this author. This book had a great twist at the end. I had a feeling that it was headed in that direction but it was still great. I always love when there is a HEA and when with a twist of fate you can be with the one you thought you couldn't be with. My friend has been talking to me about this author for a while as she loves her books. I'm glad I finally read one! I would definitely recommend reading. 'Read and Reviewed by LSK Sweetheart Reviews'

I read this book while waiting at the doctor's office this morning, so it's a very quick, easy read. I smiled throughout and I loved the relationship between Jim and his lifelong friend. It was great to see predator shifter races (wolf and bear) able to form long-lasting friendships. Ms. Arend doesn't shy away from any of the various animals around from having their own shifter-kind, even having mink shifters which you don't hear about very often. Now, as to the love. I have to say, I was stressing about Lillie throughout the book. All we know for most of the book was that she was in Vegas for some sort of "last hurrah". I was terrified it was some sort of impending illness - she'd been given months to live or something. Yes, I know, it's a romance, but even if she's dying, they could still have had a "happily for now" ending. Thankfully, these two get their HEA ending and that's about all I'm going to say on that. THeir personalities meshed well together and I liked Lillie's very quiet, subdued personality Weird, but true. Jim certainly grew a bit, learning there was more to life than simply a silly coin he and his friend had been betting on for years now. I was happy at how everything resolved for the couple. Four stars! (I really need to find something other than stars - if anyone knows of a cute gargoyle image, I might use it!)

Copper King (Takhini Shifters #1) by Vivian Arend Grizzly Bear shifter Jim Halcyon and his best friend wolf shifter Damon Black have a yearly tradition of gambling for Lady Luck, a copper coin they acquired when they were eighteen years old.  This year the challenge is taking place on Friday in Las Vegas.  Damon has won the bet the past three years. This time, Jim is determined not to let anything distract him from winning, especially women.   Black bear shifter Lillie Ruadh is on a quest to complete her bucket list before her life-changing  move on Friday.  Among the items is a stop and fling in Las Vegas.  Having a few days to enjoy himself before Friday, Jim is more than happy to help Lillie out.  However, there is more to Lady Luck then being a copper penny. I really enjoyed Copper King.  The story was endearing and entertaining throughout.  The characters are likeable and fun.  I enjoyed Jim’s and Damon’s friendship.  Being different types of shifters is uncommon, making their relationship more special.  Lillie being shy and mysterious brings an intrigue into the story. The plot is engaging and carefully thought out. This made the book very hard to put down.    It has been a while since I read a book by Vivian Arend.  It reminded me how much I enjoy her work and am glad that I read this book. Arend wrote a creative tale that I am sure will become a successful new series.  I’m hoping we’ll hear Damon’s story soon. Complimentary copy provided in exchange for an honest review.

Enjoyed reading about Jim and Lillie. The book was mostly about their personal lives and not so much about their daily responsibilities. Personally I enjoy a more rounded story. But if you have free time and enjoy shifter stories (where they only shift once) go for it! J

Once again this author did not disappoint :) Great characters and an easy to follow plot line with many splendid details thrown in, I found I didnt want to put the book down. Main character decides to do a bucket list before she gets married off. Vegas it is, and meets a wonderful bear shifter who puts her at ease and together their chemistry is explosive. With only slight dramatic action throughout, this is a smooth sailing romantic read that I highly recommend.
