Description: Pain is a symptom for a majority of patients, and nurses who are certified in pain management help provide them with a higher quality of care. This is a thorough review for the certification exam, with algorithms and graphics to facilitate nurses' understanding. The second edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a study guide for the pain management certification exam for nurses. The book meets the objectives by providing a complete curriculum for nurses specializing in pain management.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is intended for nurses preparing for the certification exam for pain management as well as for all nurses who encounter patients in pain. I would add to the audience student nurses who explore pain in their curriculum. The book also could be used as a reference on nursing units. The authors are certified in pain management, have terminal degrees, and are leaders in the pain management professional organization.
Features: Although the book is a bit dry, it thoroughly reviews pain management. It discusses the nurse's role and provides a strong foundation in pain and then expands to incorporate theories of pain and cultural, ethical, and political considerations. The book highlights the special needs of vulnerable populations. The future of pain management is discussed, along with the hot topic of substance use and abuse. The bland graphics could be improved if they were larger and in color, and the font is small and seems crowded. These design elements make the book less desirable to read or review.
Assessment: Overall, however, this is definitely the most comprehensive book I have reviewed on pain management for nurses. Other books seem to cover some topics but are not comprehensive. The updated edition is needed due to the fast pace of change in pain management and the expanding role of registered nurses.
