"Core" rocketed Stone Temple Pilots to the top of the alternative world. Even critics constant critisim of thier sounding like Peral Jam or ripping chords of from Alice in Chains. This album still carries its own weight. It's a very stright ahead rock album with great chords with some catchy lyrics. If you want to buy an album that rocks, definetly pick up the "Core" album. Its great rocker songs include "Sex Type Thing", "Crackerman", and the sound-a-like Alice in Chains, "Wicked Garden". But this album shows also that STP has the power to get away from its metal roots with the smooth trasitions to "Plush" and "Creep" which are more of a softer sound, but great rock songs none the less. So if you want 2 pick up great rock material, pick up STP's "Core", it rocks!

This album was the first of STP that I had heard...and I have to tell you that I fell in love with the baseness and crude sexness of the songs. I love STP and this album made a name for them....

The allmusic.com guy does not seem to appreciate what the Stone Temple Pilots were, and that was the best alternative band around at the time. Of the top 5 (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains) their debut was the best. Without Nirvana this album was timeless enough to have made it. Musically they are far superior to Nirvana in everyway. While they were accused of being Pearl Jam copycats, Pearl Jam could only wish to have the consistency of songs that STP put forth with this effort. Further, the songs on Ten and Core sound nothing alike, and only a similar singing style (oh my god it was grunge, and they sounded similar on some tracks, heck Weiland even showed more versatility on this album that Vedder has ever). Soundgarden had been a band with several albums out, and were generally heavier, and Alice In Chains was just plain darker. The hits off this album fit into different genres, which show the versatility of STP. The drawbacks are Dead and Bloated which gets old very fast (after seeming awesome), and Wet My Bed, which has the only bright spot being the great transition into the best song on the album: Crackerman. I urge STP haters to give the band a chance, because the music speaks for itself.

Looking back and after hearing all their other CD's, I still believe the Core is really their best album. They've definetly gotten much less heavy over the years and I was sad when Scot traded his thick, deep voice for the higher and more gritty one, but it's all still good. If you were more a fan of ''Down'' than ''Sour Girl'' or ''Days of the Week,'' then you should check Core out.
