I was given this book in return for an honest review. I want to thank J.T. Cope IV for sending me his book and allowing me this opportunity. I did not know what to expect from this tale. I was pleasantly surprised by the enchanting tale, and I look forward to reading the second book, The Tears of Adina. The book was fresh with its unusual setting and style. I tried to imagine reading this as a ten or even thirteen year old would. There is a lot to enjoy from the horses to the magic to the mystery. I really believe that I would have enjoyed this even more, if I had read it as a kid. The characters in the story are good role models, including the children. The way the kids talked to the adults reminded me a lot of my family from down south. The constantly saying ‘yes mam’ and ‘yes sir’ really surprised me and made me laugh a few times. There is a wide range of characters, and at first, I had trouble keeping up with who was who. The characters sometimes blend a bit, but the author explains each one nicely enough to keep me from falling too far behind. The children really do solve their own problems, and the parents are not constantly over them. I believe seeing other kids making their own decisions and learning from their mistakes is something needed in books. What got my attention even more than the ‘magic’, the mythical creatures, or even the horseback riding, was the mystery of the almost-forgotten book. The only thing that I found odd was how long it took them to find the lost book. Not that the story dragged, but when a new scene or chapter would start, it would suddenly be a month or more ahead and I found myself thinking ‘what did they do that whole time?’ or ‘Were they really that busy with school to not keep searching?’ Still, seeing the time jumps gave the author a chance to show off the setting of the book. We get to view Countryside in all the seasons and watch Luke participate in the many festivals and events. It helped connect to the place as a reader and understand what it was like to live there. I have to admit that I have never read anything like this book before. The mix of country style living with the feeling of old fashioned royalty and a bit of modern touches makes it unique. The small town, library, restaurants, and people were intriguing. His descriptions are detailed enough to have me imagining the scenes clearly. The library sounded amazing, and as a bookie, I found myself imaging myself there. I sympathized easily with both the children and the adults. As a mom, it broke my heart seeing his dad having to leave back to the military. The father-son trust had me feeling for the characters. It made them feel realistic and relatable. The book has a larger print, but it took longer than I expected to get through. Countryside was an easy read that I probably could have read much quicker given free time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys young adult or children’s fiction with a wonderful magical twist. Thanks again to J.T. Cope IV for letting me read his wonderful book.

There is another dimension that lies within our world where magic is real. Luke Rayburn is 11 years old and thinks he is seeing things. Dark figures are looming around the park and street where he lives. They want something from him. His grandparents come to take him, his brothers, sisters and Mom to Countryside - that other world - while his father is gone for a year in the military. Luke has lots to learn about the history of Countryside, his family and the soulless. He also has a mission - he must find the book before the dark ones do because the fate of the world lies in its pages. I think J.T. Cope IV created good characters in the Rayburn family as a whole. They have a history and a place in Countryside. The story line is an interesting one and I think he handled the transition between worlds and the differences thoroughly. I imagine Countryside: The Book of the Wise has something in it for all middle school readers or any readers that like fantasy. There is football, fantasy, magic and family. It definitely would keep them turning the pages. This ebook was provided to me by the publisher for review purposes.

What if a different world lay just beyond some mystical tunnel? What if a young teen found he really belonged in that world? And what if the fate of that world now hung in the balance? Countryside presents a well-drawn landscape and society, parallel to our own, in this first book of J. T. Cope IV’s series. It offers an intriguing blend of magic, horse-drawn carriages, junior high in the USA, football scores and more. And it’s the place Luke’s mother brings the family when his father’s job takes him away. With grandparents, uncles, servants, friends and enemies all gathered there, it’s a world teeming with new characters for Luke and the reader to meet. A fast start, filled with past action, sets the stage for events to come, but leaves open the question of which side to take. Then comes a bleak introduction to Luke’s real world, followed by magic and a blend of regular and enchanted schooling, a gathering of dark forces, and possible treachery. The huge cast of characters adds interest and depth - a little confusing at times, but always intriguing. Football offers plenty for boys to enjoy. And Luke’s wild adventure certainly adds excitement, though the ending might leave everyone unsure of what’s really going on. Which is fine; there’ll be more volumes to reveal more of the tale. Disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book and I offer my honest review.

I read this book after several family members highly recommended it to me.  I was completely captivated by the way the author described Countryside.  I found myself lost in his imagination and loved the world he created.  The action scenes, especially towards the end of the book, were exceptional and I look forward to the sequel to see how life pans out for Luke, his friends and family in the wonderful world of Countryside.  If you like stories with great character development, action packed plot and exceptional underlying morals, this book is a winner for you.

I came across this book for my son and decided to read it myself while he was reading it and telling me how much he enjoyed it. A great magical adventure with the right amount of mystery that kept us entertained. The protagonist is an excelent role model for my son and the family portreyed is an terrific example of what it means to look out for each other and do the right thing especially when things get difficult.

Terrific coming of age story. Recommended to my nephew, but could be enjoyed by all ages. When's a sequel coming?

Got a copy of this for my 10 year old nephew and he tore into it, so absorbed he barely spoke to anybody until he was finished! When I asked him what he thought, he just looked at me and said: "when's the next one coming out?"  Can't think of a better recommendation than that!
