Danger abounds when Shelby Arroyo arrives in Gold Country. Her life is constantly in danger. She is there to help her Uncle. But no one wants her to accomplish the work. Barrett doesn't like her Uncle. But somehow he keeps getting thrown together with Shelby and saving her. God's plan to bring forgiveness runs throughout the book. It isn't easy I know. Through this book and like Barrett, I was able to let go of feelings caused by Christians I had forgive but could not forget and let go of what happened. Thanks Dana because I now have that peace and freedom. Course you get to enjoy Christmas too. But the dangers will keep you reading.

4 1/2 STARS! Danger, mystery and instant attraction! With the first book in a new series, Dana Mentink takes us straight into the heart of a ranching family destined to overcome their struggles and find their happily-ever-afters! The family foundation is well developed, and the plot of this first book is very intriguing. The falling for each other aspect happened super quick, but the story was well told, my interest was kept throughout, and I look forward to more to come in the series. Rancher Barrett Thorn seems to be in the right place at the right time to help a woman in distress on more than one occasion these days! He can't resist feeling attracted to the sassy and determined woman who isn't going to let anyone stop her from doing her job ... but when he find out who her family is, he might have to second think that considering he blames them for his wife's death! Shelby Arroyo arrived in gold country to do a survey on a mine, but someone seems to be determined to stop her from doing so. It all starts with someone attacking her from behind, but it doesn't take long for a neighbor to be threatening her to her face. What is going on in this town? She's determined to see it through to the end ... even if it puts her in danger, but Barrett isn't willing to watch anything happen to her, so he invites himself along for the ride!

Cowboy Christmas Guardian is the first in a new series by Dana Mentink. Shelby Arroyo is trying to do her job by assessing mineral rights in a mine, but someone is determined to stop her! They will stop at nothing to make sure Shelby does not accomplish her mission. Enter Barrett Thorn to help the damsel in distress. The only problem is that Shelby is related to the man responsible for Barrett's wife's death. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and seeing first hand their struggles with hurts from the loss of loved ones and learning to forgive while staying on the edge of my seat to see what was going to happen next. In typical Dana Mentink style, the reader will be drawn into the page-turning suspense from the very beginning. However, just when you think you have it all figured out, there is a huge plot twist at the very end. You'll have to read it to find out! This book is full of nail-biting edge of your seat suspense that doesn't disappoint. Oh and just the right amount of romance of course! I look forward to the rest of the series that will feature the other Thorn brothers. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Going down into a mine today is just as dangerous as it was years ago, especially when someone is intent on killing you. Cowboy Christmas Guardian by Dana Mentink is a contemporary cowboy story about Shelby, an assayer trying to help out her uncle with his mineral rights and someone does not want her to do this. From the very first page we meet Shelby in a desperate situation and Barrett Thorn, a neighbor to her uncle’s and with an ax to grind with her uncle, is the one who helps her out and continues to do so. Shelby does not know who to trust, she just wants to pay back the kind deeds her uncle did for her before he loses the ranch. The only neighbors who are not intent on disliking or wanting to kill her are the Thorn family and there is serious bad blood between Barrett and her uncle. This was a pretty quick story of two people falling in love in less than ideal circumstances, and both learning that forgiveness really sets the forgiver free. There was also an eerie atmosphere of being stalked or watched throughout the story, so it was nice Shelby had a strong cowboy by her side, not to mention his three brothers. So put any claustrophobic feelings aside and enjoy this little Christmas adventure. I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to post a positive review and all views an opinions are my own.

First of all, can I just say, I love this cover? It’s so festive with the lights around the ranch sign. And it fits the story well. Barrett Thorn has experienced tragedy. His happily-ever-after was cut short when the love of his life was killed in an accident. Now Barrett is content to spend time with his parents and three brothers working with the horses on their ranch. When he finds a woman during a storm, a surge of protectiveness he’s not felt in a long time runs through him. Shelby seems to have a knack for getting herself in trouble. Yet, when he learns who Shelby is related to, he’s torn about spending time with her. As both Shelby and Barrett navigate the choppy waters of learning to forgive others who have hurt them, they are embroiled in danger. Shelby is determined to assay the mine in order to help save her uncle from financial ruin—a mine that someone does not want her to explore. There’s a good twist at the end of this one that I didn’t see coming which always gives a book higher marks for me. While the mystery is an engaging one, it’s the relationships that lie at the heart of this story—family, friends, and romance all have a place in Cowboy Christmas Guardian. I, for one, am looking forward to reading more about the Thorn brothers and the Gold Bar Ranch in future books from Dana Metink. ***I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including NetGalley. On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Cowboy Christmas Guardian by Dana Mentink is butternut squash soup with a pinch of cayenne pepper. This homey, unassuming soup is sturdy and predictable, but that pinch of cayenne might catch you unaware at any moment. It's a delightful combination. [free copy received. opinions my own] Barrett Thorn, out to search for a missing horse in a storm, comes upon a hidden car with a trunk that thumps at him. In moments, he meets Shelby Arroyo who is intent on assaying an old mine, even at the possible cost of her life. Barrett can't get her out of his head even though every interaction seems to include a death threat against Shelby's life from an unknown harasser. Clearly, they're falling in love, but will they make it out alive by Christmas? Gosh. I have to admit that my interest was piqued by cowboy and suspense. I just couldn't get my head wrapped around that idea, and then add Christmas. But, I really enjoyed this face paced story, the character development, and the reveal. And it worked. Cowboy chivalry and headstrong woman made for an interesting chemistry and clean romance. Grab this one for your Christmas reading.

You can’t go wrong with the perfect elements of Christmas, cowboys, suspense, family, and romance. I could not put this down, as it is fast paced and the dialog just draws you in. I love the strong character of Shelby and her hero cowboy, Barrett. They have real life hurts and struggle with their feelings of unforgiveness lining up with their Faith. It was so nice to see them grow throughout the story. I enjoyed the closeness of the Thorn family and look forward to reading more about them. Great read for the holidays. I received a complimentary copy from the author. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Dana Mentink has done it again with another edge of your seat page turner! Cowboy Christmas Guardian is the first book in the new series Gold Country Cowboys, and it is a must read! The story's plot and characters grabbed me in from the very beginning with its action, suspense, romance, and more action and suspense! I literally felt I was right there with them as they were fighting to get out of the mine, then holding my breath as time after time someone was trying their best to kill them! Can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this series! I received a copy of this book from the author, but was not required to give a positive review. This is my honest opinion of this book.

Throw a still grieving widower with a passel full of family members, a lone mineral assayer with few family ties, and a killer who will stop at nothing to keep secrets buried together and you have the makings of a great suspense story! Barrett Thorn—older brother, gallant protector, a man of honor & respect, a true cowboy at heart—is also man who has a strong faith but yet harbors bitterness and unforgiveness in his heart. Coming face-to-face with the woman who's family member killed his wife in an accident makes him man-up to finally dealing with it. Shelby Arroyo has one job to do, assay the mine on a neighboring property to her uncle and send in samples, but someone's out to stop her in whatever way they can! This one kept me glued to the pages with all that happens and just when I thought I knew everything, the author threw in another twist. I won't give away the plot, just know some scenes had me clutching the book so hard, my fingers turned white and left me breathless! Suspense aplenty, romance a-brewing, faith tested, and an unexpected ending left me wanting more! I can't wait to meet the rest of the Thron brothers. *I received a complimentary copy from the author. No favorable review was required and all opinions are my own. *

The one thing I know when I read a Dana Mentink book is that there will be a lot of action, the characters will be fantastic and the story will be so good that I better block out a significant amount of time because I wont want to put the book down! This book is the beginning of a new series set in the California gold country and it is fantastic! As I said, there is a lot of action. We get to meet the Thorn family and this book introduces us to all of them, but focuses on Barrett. He is a widower and cannot (will not?) forgive the family who killed his wife, though it was accidental. He is a religious man but he still can't forgive because of certain circumstances and you'll have to read the book to find out what they are! So, what happens when he finds a woman (Shelby) locked in a truck of a car on a stormy night and rescues her, only to find out she is part of the family that killed his wife?? Oh, sparks fly, let me tell you!!!! However, as Shelby continues to be targeted by someone dead set on killing her, Barrett seems to feel responsible for her. In fact, his whole family gets involved! I love the Thorn family already and can't wait to see his brothers get their own books. I definitely recommend this book. Start your holidays with it!

The Thorn family is admired and respected in their community. Unfortunately they share malevolence for Shelby's uncle and cousin. Barrett Thorn's wife was killed in a car accident caused by Shelby's cousin, causing heartbreak for the entire Thorn family. Forgiveness and acceptance is difficult, particularly for Barrett. His life was crushed, and the thought of a future relationship was out of the question, until Shelby walked into his life. Dana Mentink has written some of my favorite mystery/thrillers. The author has an incredible insight into her characters, and presents them with authenticity and charm. The setting is creative and vivid. The pace of this book is fast and filled with mystery and intrigue. Danger lurks around every corner where Shelby is concerned, causing the Thorn family to offer protection for her. A love attraction develops as one of the Thorn men feels protective toward Shelby. I was captivated by this book, and look forward to additional books in this new series! Highly recommended! Right in time for Christmas, Cowboy Christmas Guardian by Dana Mentink, is a thrilling, suspense-filled novel. This is the first book in Dana's newest series, Gold Country Cowboys. Shelby Arroyo comes to Gold Country looking to help her Uncle out. He has helped her so many years, now she feels most obligated to help him out. He has access to a mine and she's looking to assess it and collect some samples. However, someone wants to kill her before she can collect those samples. Barrett Thorn comes to her rescue the first time and there seems to be an immediate connection between Shelby and this widowed cowboy. What happens when Barrett finds out that Shelby's cousin, her Uncle's son, is the one who killed his wife? Will Shelby continue to try to collect samples at the mine when her life is in danger? Dana Mentink is an amazing author! Everytime I read one of her books, I think it is the best one yet, until the next one comes out! This book follows suit-one that you will pick up and won't put down until the very last page is read! I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from the author and have given my honest opinion.

Cowboy Christmas Guardian is a fantastic start to a new series about the Thorn brothers. It is packed with danger and situations that sometimes took my breath away! And the romance is sweetly woven throughout the story, building naturally. The author did a good job of showing the emotions that both Barrett and Shelby deal with regarding forgiveness. Both of these characters have been through some terrible situations, resulting in hearts that are hurting. Their journey to a new life, possibly together, depends on their ability to overcome the bitterness that unforgiveness can foster. I am really looking forward to book two in this series. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

WOW. This book grabbed me on the first page and didn’t let go until the last one. When I first saw the title I knew it was going to be good because, you know, cowboys and Christmas. But it was a lot more than that. What a great adventure as well as suspense. I loved how the characters Shelby and Barrett, as well as some of the more minor characters, found healing as they went along. This was such a good book and I would recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author and was not required to write a positive review. These opinions are all mine.

What could be hidden in the old mine that someone would be willing to kill to keep secret? Shelby Arroyo has come to Gold Bar to assess the mineral rights of the mine. Her uncle has fallen on hard times, and she wants to do whatever she can to help him. She didn't count on running into a mystery that results in numerous attempts on her life. She also didn't count on running into cowboy Barrett Thorn. Barrett finds himself attracted to Shelby until he learns that she is related to the man who caused the accident that killed his wife. Barrett wants to have nothing to do with Shelby or her uncle, but honorable man that he is, he can't leave Shelby unprotected. He risks his own life to keep her safe. Soon Barrett and Shelby find themselves not only fighting their mutual attraction, but also fighting to stay alive. With Christmas only a few days away, will Barrett and Shelby discover the secret of the mine before the holiday? Even more important, will they be alive to celebrate? Cowboy Christmas Guardian is the first novel in Dana Mentink's new Gold Country Cowboys series. True to Dana's form, the book throws you into the action on page one and keeps you hooked. You'll feel the characters' pain and be a part of their struggle to resolve their differences. Once again Dana Mentink has written a fast-paced novel filled with suspense, romance, and inspiration. Thumps up, Dana--another five-star novel. Susan Simpson
