K-Gr 2-Crackers doesn't mind mice the way that most cats do. This oddity doesn't bother him until he tries to get a job. It seems that all of his employers want him to do one thing and one thing only-keep the rodents away. Ironically, after being fired from the warehouse, the town pool, and the local restaurant, the feline finds that his dream job is at the Squeak & Company Cheese Shop-but no self-respecting mouse is going to hire a cat. Crackers's past good deeds prove useful, however, as the mice he befriended come forward to vouch for him, and the manager agrees to give him a try. Of course, he becomes famous, and everyone is happy. Crackers, depicted as an everyday tabby in the cartoon illustrations, towers over the mice in a gentle giant sort of way. His many facial expressions convey his emotions during his varied job searches. Ultimately, Crackers is a charming feline for young readers to know.-Lisa Gangemi Krapp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
