"CALYX stands out from the crowd..."—Utne Reader

"CALYX is an aesthetic pleasure to hold and to look at, as well as to read and remember."—Robin Morgan

"TERRIFIC, rich, inspired, inspiring."—Olga Broumas

"Thank you for all your good and beautiful work."—Gloria Steinem

"CALYX holds a special place in my heart. Some of my very first published words—two poems—were published in CALYX years ago. I've never forgotten the thrill of turning those beautifully illustrated pages and seeing my name, my earnest words, printed there alongside those of some of my literary heroines. It made me feel as if I belonged to the important company of women."—Barbara Kingsolver

"CALYX is a paragon of the literary arts, an exemplar of what great writing and editing can create. From here will come our literary heritage."—John Berry, editor-in-chief, Library Journal

"...devoted to the very best art and literature of the contemporary woman."—Literary Magazine Review

"The work you do brings dignity, intelligence, and a sense of wholeness to the world."—Barry Lopez

"A first rate journal of art and literature..."—Bill Katz, Magazines for Libraries

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A nonprofit literary publisher committed to supporting and publishing the works of women writers and artists, CALYX, which also publishes a journal of the same name, celebrates its 25th anniversary with this anthology. This slim volume collects 19 poets, 16 visual artists, and 11 prose writers, among them Ellen Bas, Marina Tsvetaeva, Monique de Varennes, and M. Evelina Galang. In the introduction, the editors explain that their anthology is "full of ghosts of lives lost, of deaths unavenged or unacknowledged." The work here explores the lives of women and girls, making heroines of them all. The art, selected from the 25th Anniversary Art Show at the Corvallis Arts Center, features a variety of media but is shown in black-and-white reproductions, a curiously bland presentation that minimizes its effect. A final section provides reviews of some of the contributors' other books. The anthology pays fine tribute to an organization that has consistently provided a voice for important women writers and artists in the early stages of their careers. Recommended for most libraries, particularly those with feminist literature collections. Cynde Bloom Lahey, New Canaan Lib., CT Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
