The title and cover with it's motorcycle engine compelled me to purchase this book. Here is a new voice, an author whose cadence is individual. And I do refer to a rhythmic flow of words. And like with any unfamiliar rhythm pattern it requires a letting go of set conceptions, in this case the notion of how a story should be told, how the language is used. Crazysad Heart of a Fool is a first novel and the story is intriging. Because it is one of those rare novels that keeps the reader guessing and because there is an intensity in the unfolding of the story I feel it is unfair even to give away the characters names. Too often reviews are merely summaries of a novels content, two paragraphs in and we know the whole tale. Purchasing a new book should be an adventure, not a wading through a shallow pond. 'He's a desperate, lonely man on the run with no place to go'; 'She's a dreamy, young art school dropout retreating to a deserted farm left her by her grandmother'; 'Set within the idyllic hay meadows, woods and back roads of the vividly depicted Catskill Mountains'; such are the few descriptive sentences used to lure the reader into the book. We know the girl wants to ride a motocycle and to paint. We know the man is tormented by old hatreds and a recurrent nightmare. We sense this will be both an adventure story and a love story and that the setting itself plays a part. I am an avid reader and enjoy various genre, this novel does not fit neatly into a category yet because it doesn't, it appeals to a very wide audience. I've passed this book along to many different friends, male, female, old, young and inbetween, readers and nonreaders of fiction and everyone seems to enjoy it. 'I feel as if I know the characters personally', 'I can't get these two people out of my mind' are typical responses. Narrated by both well-developed characters; this is a book I've read twice and felt there was even more to be gotten out of it the second time; I shall return to it again. It is adult fiction that delivers. I recommend it highly to all those readers who want to be transported beyond the ordinary. Gloria Nero is an author to be reckoned with and I look forward to her next novel. Forthcoming soon, I hope.
