About the Author

Hetty van Gurp is a peace educator with a lifelong commitment to both teaching and justice. After 30 years as a teacher and administrator, Hetty founded Peaceful Schools International, an internationally recognized organization.

In addition to her work in education, Hetty has also served as a member of the federal Human Rights Tribunal. Hetty's contributions have been honoured with a number of awards, including a Baha'i Commendation for promoting racial harmony, the YMCA Peace Medal, the Nova Scotia Principal of Distinction Award, the Annual Crime Prevention Society of Nova Scotia Award, the Queen's Jubilee Medal and the Order of Nova Scotia.

In 2006, Hetty was presented with the Canadian Teachers' Federation Special Recognition Award for meritorious service to education. Hetty received the Human Rights Award from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission in 2006. In 2006 Hetty was named as a Canadian hero by TIME magazine and Today's Parent magazine. Reader's Digest also recognized Hetty as a Canadian hero in 2007. In 2008, Hetty was the recipient of the first Public Education Advocacy Award bestowed by the Nova Scotia Teachers' Union.

Hetty holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education from Mount Saint Vincent University. Hetty is an adjunct faculty member at Saint Mary's University. In 2005, a Doctorate of Civil Law was conferred on Hetty by Saint Mary's University. Hetty is the author of four books: Peace in the Classroom; Peaceful Schools: Models that Work; Peer Mediation: a Complete Training Manual and Creating Caring Schools: peace-promoting activities for all seasons.
