Grief is often perceived as a dark and lonely journey; as a result, it is a topic we avoid in today’s society. Within a 20-month period, Elizabeth Berrien endured the loss of her stillborn son and the subsequent death of her husband on active duty in Afghanistan. She found herself a 27-year-old widow whose life had been shattered. In this book, she shares the experiences, the wisdom, and even the joy she gathered on her journey from grief to hope.
Creative Grieving offers support and encouragement while acknowledging that there is no “right” way to grieve. Elizabeth tells you about the emotions she experienced while grieving in an ”instant gratification” society, the importance of self-nurturing, the balancing of grief and motherhood, the redefining of community and relationships, and the discovery of new passion and meaning.
Her authentic account of grieving will empower you as you cope with loss. Along with Elizabeth’s personal stories are pieces of “Hip Chick Wisdom” from a community of women, “Creative Hip Chick Ideas," and a list of helpful resources. By reading Elizabeth’s story of vulnerability and courage, you will learn how to find your own creative way of moving through grief to hope—uncovering gifts along the way.

Reviewed by Samantha Rivera for Readers' Favorite Grief is a very powerful emotion. It can take over your entire life and turn it upside down in the blink of an eye. In Creative Grieving by Elizabeth Berrien, you will learn more about the process of grief from someone who has been there. Elizabeth’s story is one of unimaginable pain, unless you have been there yourself. She has been through loss and devastation. She has also been able to overcome that devastation to be there for her daughter and the rest of her family. Understanding the way that love works and the way that grieving works has helped her and has pushed her to help others. I have suffered loss previously and understand how painful it is. You feel like you don’t want to get up in the morning because that just makes the loss more real. Having a book like this would definitely have helped me and it will help a lot of other people. Understanding that you really are not alone is an amazing feeling and it helps you to overcome the feelings that are taking over your life. This book explains exactly what Elizabeth went through, but it also includes letters designed to help the reader in their own situation. I also really liked the quotes in each chapter which help provide motivation. Creative Grieving is a book for anyone suffering a loss. We all do suffer differently but understanding that, even with our differences our losses are similar, helps to make that loss more bearable. Elizabeth Berrien understands this fact.
Creative Grieving is an unadulterated and candid journey through Elizabeth's hardest moments in life. She brings you through an emotional journey of sadness, will, and inspiration as she discovers her own internal healing. Where some books are written by "experts", this one is written from first hand experience and straight from the heart. This book would benefit anyone as we all have or will experience loss at some point and could surely use guidance coping with it. It is very easy to read, to follow, and to be able to apply the principals and tools she illustrates in the book. It has a new age twist that helps it appeal to a wide range of men and women. This book is truly life-changing and helps one realize they are not alone in their own grieving process. Just as I have recommended this book to some of my close friends who have unfortunately encountered a close loss, I recommend this book to you.
Elizabeth's story is moving, heartbreaking and inspiring all at once. Anyone who has experienced significant loss in their lives can relate to the myriad of emotions she is beautifully honest about. In the midst of your grief, you may feel very alone and isolated. This book is the companion you need. You'll realize there's an amazing group of women who understand your experience and can provide the type of advice you really need, not the kind people think they "should" give you. The tools Elizabeth provides throughout the book are a wonderful way to work through your grief, and ultimately help you find some silver linings. I highly recommend this book. Elizabeth has a lot to share from not only her own personal losses, but the many women she has helped through her non-profit grief center, The Respite
A very moving book about some of the most difficult experiences a human can go through. The book is "raw," meaning that it does a phenomenal job of capturing the full range of (often inexplicable) feelings, emotions and actions that come with grief. As Elizabeth takes us through her journey, we can see that embracing and moving through grief is the healthiest way to move forward and live a happy and productive life. it's also helpful to know that all of your "irrational" thoughts and behaviors are totally normal and even encouraged to help get through the process. A very touching and extremely helpful book for anyone experiencing any type of loss.
This book is truly helpful for someone coping with any type of loss. I really appreciate how honest and raw the writer is when it comes to her experiences. It really makes you feel less alone in your own grief. I found it very uplifting and comforting.
