Crescent City Kings [CD & DVD]
This collection features 16 marvelous examples of the New Orleans R&B sound. Generally piano-based, but driven by some of the finest pop horn charts ever written, these cuts are funky, fun, and impossibly to resist. There isn't a lame track in the bunch, but some of the highlights include Ernie K-Doe's everyman lament "Mother in Law," Dr. John's thick and heavy "Zu Zu Man," Robert Parker's effortlessly infectious "Barefootin'," the lovely "Poor Boy Got to Move" by Allen Toussaint, and Al Hirt's timeless instrumental "Java." A bonus DVD disc features performance clips of the great Fats Domino doing "Blueberry Hill," "Blue Monday," "Ain't That a Shame," and other hits.
