Casey (U. of Auckland, New Zealand) argues that the crisis of market globalization has led the rescinding of the privileged place given to rationality in classical social theory and that the modernist agenda has been thoroughly discredited. She offer s a new critical approach to contemporary organizational analysis that emerges out of the social thinking of the Frankfurt School but emphasizes both historical and empirical dimensions. Working with an idea of the social as an ensemble of conflictual relations between social forces, she argues that we live in a "hyper-industrial" society in which large organizations assert their dominance over nearly all aspects of social life.
