Critical Instinct by Jane Crouch

Every single person Paige has drawn has ended up dead. And now she's drawn herself.

Paige Jeffries' paintings are the acclaim of the art world. Original. Compelling. But after a brutal attack two years ago --a savage beating from an unknown assailant--Paige has become all but a recluse. She knows her mind is broken. In her sleep she's drawing scenes of violence. Murders. Going to the cops isn't an option because they already think she's crazy. And they may be right.

Seasoned homicide detective Brett Wagner is asked to look into a cold case nobody wants: the assault and battery of a local artist who claims to have drawn a picture of her own attack before it even happened. He remembers shy Paige from high school, and is driven to find her attacker, to believe her when nobody else does, to protect the innocent beauty.

Because when he witnesses firsthand what Paige is drawing in her sleep, Brett realizes they are scenes from actual cases. Cases that had no connection until now. Portland has a secret serial killer, and Paige is somehow linked to his mind.

And he's coming for her.

Janie recently relocated with her husband and four children to Germany (due to her husband's job as support for the U.S. Military), after living in Virginia for nearly 20 years. When she's not listening to the voices in her head (and even when she is), she enjoys traveling, long-distance running, movie-watching, knitting and adventure (obstacle) racing. Janie completed an Ironman Triathlon in 2014 and is prepping for another one in 2017.

Her favorite quote: "Life is a daring adventure or nothing." - Helen Keller.

Critical Instinct by Janie Crouch is Book 2 of the Instinct series and is a Romantic Thriller Brett Wagner is a homicide detective who has moved back to Portland after leaving on a football scholarship 15 years ago. Brett has a knack for solving cold cases and goes to interview a famous artist who was the victim of a violet assault 2 years ago. When the beautiful Paige opens the door to her house, Brett immediately recognises his classmate from art class, back when he'd been a senior and she'd been a freshman. Paige answers Brett's questions but dreads the question that she knows is coming up. Paige had drawn a picture of herself 3 weeks before a similar photo had been taken of her after her assault. Paige doesn't want the charming and handsome Brett to call her a liar or crazy and is surprised when Brett is willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Brett and Paige soon start dating, and when Paige feels that she can trust Brett, she shows him her portfolio of drawings. Drawings or murdered women all, all done while Paige had been sleepwalking. Brett and his partner know that they have a serial killer on their hands and are using Paige's drawings to try to find something that links all the victims so that they can figure out who the killer is. But when Paige draws a picture of herself dead and is kidnapped, will Brett be able to save Paige based on the clues in her drawing? Critical Instinct has mystery, suspense and passion. Janie Crouch is a master of suspense and drew me in with an intriguing storyline and a cast full of interesting characters. I highly recommend this book. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book

Do not let the small price of this book fool you. Ms. Crouch is an excellent storyteller who pays attention to detail and engages a reader from the opening. Critical Instinct's characters unique characters are compelling -- Alex and Paige balance each other beautifully and the supporting characters are equally interesting. I've already ordered the second book -- Survival Instinct -- to this trilogy. Delighted to have found this author!
