The Orwell File

Prologue

The camera zoomed in and out as it auto adjusted. Two people, a man and a woman, came into focus. They were clutching hands – they looked pale and exhausted.

‘Ready when you Mr and Mrs Smith,’ came a voice from the background. ‘Take your time.’

The woman looked down at her hands and silent tears dropped onto their clasped hands.

The man took a deep breath, looked at the camera and began to speak…

‘It was three o’ in the morning when there was a knock at the door. The whole family was asleep. The knocking was incessant and eventually it woke my wife and I up. We went over to our bedroom widow and looked outside. Three men in suits were standing on the doorstep. My wife told me to ignore them, and that they’d go away, but there was something about them that made me think if I didn’t go down then they’d come in anyway – break down the door if they had to.

‘As soon as I opened the door they barged in. They looked upstairs and checked the rooms as though they expected a mad axe man to be lurking around. One of them grabbed my wife by the arm and pulled her downstairs. She was only in her nightdress – they wouldn’t even let her get dressed.

‘They told us they were here on behalf on the social services. We had no idea what they meant. Then they said they had come for the children, and that they had proof of abuse. We’d never been so shocked. My wife was hysterical. She tried to block their way up the stairs but they just pushed past her.

‘We never got to see the evidence that thy professed to have. We never got to see a lawyer. We haven’t seen our children for three years. We’ve missed our daughter’s first birthday. We never heard her first word…’

The couple broke down and the camera went out of focus.
A man in his early thirties fidgeted as he waited to begin.

‘It’s all set up, Tell it like it is,’ the voice said again.

The man looked up, nodded, swallowed and began to talk.

‘My life was perfect. I had the career I’d always dreamed of, a new house and a beautiful fiancé. The newspaper I was working for were looking to issue a promotion, and a pay rise, to the best journalist. I was intent on getting it. The thought of more money and a better position was my motivation at first, but then I began to dig deeper and I got sucked into the tales of corruption and dodgy goings on.
‘The company’s not what we all think it is and I paid the price for finding that out and trying to bring it to people’s attention.
‘I was arrested on the charge of possession of illegal substances. They tried to scare me into pleading guilty but I was stubborn and refused. Looking back I was stupid. They changed the charge a week after they released me due to lack of evidence. This time I was taken on the charge of murder. They said they had evidence this time and that I was going away. I got scared. I knew I’d never killed anyone, but they told me if I admitted it they’d reduce my sentence drastically. My lawyer advised me to do it.
‘I did…

‘I lost everything. My fiancé left, my house was taken away, my reputation and career was destroyed and my life was ruined...
