Overview

Crossing Borders: living and learning together in a colourful world by Jenny Wickford, Fatumo Osman

Authors Jenny Wickford and Fatumo Osman come from very different backgrounds, having both grown up outside of Sweden, but each moving there when they were nineteen. Jenny grew up in Pakistan, then moved to Sweden, the home of her parents. Fatumo came to Sweden after fleeing from the civil war in Somalia. They formed an instant bond, sharing stories and thoughts about the changes they experienced, realising that, as people, there are more similarities than differences between us.

The increasing possibilities of travel, whether by force or by choice, have brought people together like never before. However, it has also triggered the building of walls and the hardening of borders. Crossing Borders explores what it means to live together in intercultural environments, and offers practical solutions for living and learning together at a time when this subject is more important than ever.

With its heartfelt blend of the personal and academic voice, the book provides a refreshing viewpoint in an informed but accessible way. Both authors hold PhD degrees and have done extensive research, but have also spent years in practical application of their metiers. Fatumo is a nurse and Jenny a physiotherapist. Both are actively involved in the support of women’s health and education. Crossing Borders is a timely and inspiring work for Spring 2018.

Jenny Wickford is a Swedish physiotherapist, educator and health enthusiast with an international heart, and a love of the outdoors, rock climbing, yoga, cycling and hiking. Her particular interest professionally is pelvic pain and dysfunction. She has a broad range of experience, having worked in Sweden, Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates, in public and private contexts, with humanitarian development work and in universities.
Jenny is also very interested in intercultural collaboration and global health. Her doctoral research was on intercultural learning and professional development, based on research done in Afghanistan. She has a keen interest in providing, developing and promoting health services for people who do not have access to the help they need. In particular, this pertains to women's health, and the education and support of those suffering from pelvic pain and dysfunction. Together with friends with similar interests, she has started the interest group Noora Wellbeing, which aims to support women's wellbeing globally.

Fatumo is a nurse, lecturer and PhD candidate from Sweden. Her area of interest is sexual and reproductive health and rights, women and children's health and wellbeing and parental support. For the past seven years, Fatumo has worked in the area of education on sexual and reproductive health and rights in low-resource settings. She is involved with education at Masters level both in Somalia and in Bangladesh. There, she assists midwives in the Midwifery Faculties with capacity-building and to improve the quality of midwifery education with the long term goal of decreasing maternal and child mortality. Fatumo's area of research focuses on the evaluation of an implemented, culturally sensitive parenting support program for Somali-born parents living in Sweden. The project aims to support parent-child relationships and to improve parents' and children's health and wellbeing. Her dream is to continue working on women's access to health services and health education in low-resource settings, with like-minded people.
