Crucian Fusion: essays, interviews, stories

Crucian Fusion is a collection of fact and fiction that speaks to the rich history as well as present day St Croix, the largest US Virgin Island.

It is a book to be dipped into - over coffee or maybe a rum, at the beach, as the sun rises or sets. Provoked by thoughts, good and bad, the essays tell of nearly nine years on island. Conversations people who have contributed to the fabric of Crucian society whether through the arts and culture, music, farming or education. And the short stories, well, they are pure fiction although a couple are based on historical events and the Census of 1846.

Crucian Fusion is for islanders, residents and visitors interested in this spectacular part of America's Caribbean.

About the Author

A nomadic life, chronicled in Expat Life Slice by Slice, has seen Anglo-Australian Apple Gidley live and work in twelve countries—the experiences of which influence her writing: Fireburn and Transfer, are historical novels set in the Danish West Indies (OC Publishing). Crucian Fusion, a love story to St Croix, the island she called home for ten years. Now published by Vine Leaves Press, Have You Eaten Rice Today? (2022) covers the communist uprising in 1950s Malaya; Finding Serenissima, (March 2025) a contemporary novel based in Venice, delves into a woman's emergence from the strains of her husband's Alzheimer's and his subsequent death; Annie's Day, which explores an Australian army nurse's perspective during WWII and beyond will be published in November 2025. She is currently researching her next historical novel. Gidley's roles have included editor for a global charity magazine, honorary consul, and dive bum, among others. After ten years in the Caribbean, Gidley relocated to Cambridgeshire, England in 2023, which has arguably been her most challenging relocation, and she misses the tropics.
