It was great to read Mitch and Paulo's story and see how they got together. They were secondary, but fairly important, characters in the other Rodeo Dreamers books, and I always wanted to know more about them. Since this was my first m/m book, I appreciated the fact that Mitch was just learning what it meant to be with a man and how the relationship was going to work. From the previous books, I knew how sexy Paulo was, but I liked learning how vulnerable he was due to being in a foreign country by himself and because of his previous experiences. I would say that if you haven't read the other Rodeo Dreamers books, the jump to the epilogue probably won't make much sense, because all the events of books 1 and 2 take place within that time jump. I wish we could have seen some of the events of those books from the viewpoint of Mitch and Paulo in this story, but I understand it was a novella intended to give us the details of how they met.

2 hot cowboys one in the closet, one out This story has an interesting premise – there is a language barrier between the two main characters; Paulo doesn’t really speak much English. Mitch, aka The Heartbreak Kid, is deep in the closet. As a bull-rider he’s not afraid of much but the thought of being “out” scares him to death. He still remembers stories of someone who came out and was brutally killed because of it. So, as the Heartbreak Kid, he flirts and dances with women but goes no further. Paulo is from Portugal and has come to the U.S. to learn the American style of bull riding. He wants to open a school in his home country that teaches both styles. Where he’s from it’s OK to be open about who you are and he has a difficult time understanding why Mitch must hide who he is. While Mitch and Paulo don’t speak the same language they manage to understand each other just fine. Mitch begins teaching Paulo English and Paulo teaches Mitch Portuguese. There is a lot of heat between the two characters but they manage to hide their relationship from their fellow rodeo riders. The sex scenes are hot and explicit. I enjoyed reading this story – my first from this author – but I’m having a hard time putting my finger on why I didn’t like it better. The ending was a bit abrupt for me and the epilogue was much appreciated. However, there was a 4 year jump and I thought that was a bit too much. It would have been better for me if the gap wasn’t so great. I can’t really explain more without giving away too much of the story.
