I loved the book, I first read it at my schools Library and I fell in love with the character Killashandra. Heart broken about her carrer as a opera star, she goes off world and finds that as a crystal singer she has an ability and is glad for the school. The ending has a tasty and saucy way and one can do only but love it.

This book by Anne McCaffrey isn't as well-known as her Pern books, but it is just as entertaining as any. I like the imaginative premise: this involves singers who act as miners, not entertainers. Killasandra herself aspired to be that other kind of singer at one point--its interesting to see her rebuild herself here; she's not all that likable at first, but she grows through this tale. One of McCaffrey's greatest strengths is her world-building, which shows off to advantage here as she creates another original and engrossing world whose intricacies are welded into the story and this is as much romance--an appealing one--as science fiction.

Killashandra Ree finds her life derailed. For her learning to Sing Crystal heals her wounds of her failed opera career. This book will flow from page to page. You will find yourself thinking about Killashandra and impationaly waiting to find time to read to the end. McCaffery gives a new charater to love after the her Pern series.

i have always enjoyed reading syfy and fantisy books. Ann McAffrey is one of my top seven authors in this life, cannot say "world", because they take me to worlds.

I read this book (and the series) in high school fifteen years ago, and thanks to a generous gift voucher to my local book shop, I'm reading them again and it feels like visiting an old friend. It struck a chord (*facepalm* - sorry) with me as a teenager, but I think I have a deeper appreciation of the characters and story lines now. Not my favourite in the series, but a truly great read for fantasy fans.
