Cuatro Caminos is Cafe Tacuba's first album in 4 years. Their last release was Reves/Yo Soy, a 2-CD set which won a Grammy. Their latest effort is a 14 track collaboration with such established artists as Dave Fridmann (of the Flaming Lips), Andrew Weiss (of Ween) and Gustavo Santaolalla (of Arco Iris). Cafe Tacuba seemlessly blend an experimental mix of traditional Latin music, pop, rock, hip hop and ska into their newest project. The production of this album seems to have many layers and textures to it. As if you can not simply categorize Cuatro Camino by one standard. The album debuted on the national album charts in Mexico at #1, probably with some help from "Eo". "Eo", the first single is a fast paced, radio friendly dance/pop song. Cafe Tacuba have been called "The Mexican Beatles". With their creative notions, they incredible talent for putting together rhythms, melodies, and words it is easy to see why. On July 4th the band had their first in-store appearance in Mexixo. Over 7,000 people showed up to see Cafe Tacuba. Police were even called in to control the crowd. This goes to show how much Cafe Tacuba & all their creativity have an affect on their fans & how they can affect those who are not fans yet, but probably will be very soon.

Café Tacuba has the ability to sound like at least 5 different bands on 14 tracks. While it’s not as experimental as previous efforts, you can’t accuse the band of lacking originality. Tracks like Cero y Uno and Que Pasará are full of energy but they still work next to the more mellow offerings of Encantamiento Inútil. The angular guitars and vocals on Recuerdo Prestado create a moody sound, almost bitter over having to ‘borrow’ memories. That track is followed by Puntos Cardinales which couldn’t be more different. They sing “amor y dulzura” and you can hear the sweetness in the vocals. My favorite track is probably Soy o Estoy. It’s upbeat and the layering of instruments creates a very full sound. Café Tacuba take on many musical directions. Throughout the album they play like a rock band that sounds a bit jazz at and folksy at one time and pop another, while bringing in influences from electronica and even new age at others.
