Sennett, author with Jonathan Cobb of the well-known book The Hidden Injuries of Class, here presents a exposition of the culture of post-Fordist capitalism that will be enjoyable and edifying for both lay readers and those familiar with other literature on capitalism and modern society. The book is based on lectures delivered at Yale, and so has a casual tone, drawing occasionally on anecdotes from Sennett's life and frequently on both books he has written and ethnographic research. The book examines the changes in personality and institutions (both public and private) that have occurred in relation to capitalism, with a focus on the 20th century, and situates these changes in relation to democratic politics and the future of society.
