Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite Curly the Cow was born on a winter's day where there was no place to go. Her mother was never around and she shivered all the time in the cold weather. The winter days continued and there was no one Curly could trust. The farmer who kept her fed her too little and that was not enough for Curly. She wanted to find a shelter to protect her from the cold winter. A new farmer found Curly and took her to his farm. Looking at Curly, the farmer understood that she had endured much. He loved Curly's playful spirit, even though she was in pain. He took good care of her and made her well again. He called the vet when her sores did not heal and Curly slowly recovered and became stronger. She could frolic and play in the green pasture. Curly the Cow by Rachelle Layne conveys a heartfelt message to young readers; every living creature is special, every life is precious, and every life is created by God. The illustrations are adorable and they make the concept come alive beautifully and with clarity. It is a good storybook to read out loud in classrooms and at home to help children understand the importance of treating living creatures properly and with love and compassion. Readers will feel sorry for Curly the Cow and the way she is treated by the first farmer. It is heartwarming to see the kindness of the second farmer who nurses her back to health and gives her a second chance at life.
