Curves by Gary Heavin, Carol Colman

Close to 2 million women have discovered Gary Heavin's secret to permanent weight loss at the nearly six thousand Curves fitness and weight-loss centers around the country. There, they've discovered that in thirty minutes, three times a week, and without a restrictive diet, they can take their weight off and keep it off for good. Now, for the first time, Gary Heavin brings this remarkable program directly to you in his first book for the general public. Here's what you'll find in Curves:

• the exercise program: thirty minutes a day-no more than three times a week;

• a combination of strength-training and aerobics that can be done at home or at the Curves center;

• a temporary diet plan that produces permanent results;

• questionnaires to determine if you're calorie sensitive or carbohydrate sensitive, helping you to individualize your food plan;

• a unique maintenance plan that allows you to eat full portions after the initial weight loss; and

• a coupon for one free week at any Curves center in the country. (good for one-week membership at any Curves location, new members only, must be 18 years or older)

Gary Heavin's revolutionary plan reprograms the metabolism to absorb 2,500 to 3,000 calories per day. That means full portions without gaining weight. And you'll see major results within two weeks.

Finally, every thing you need to get to, and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Extremely well written with no-nonsense, easy to follow plans that anyone can live with. I've now lost 25 pounds and 30 inches. No more 'diets' for me!

This is essentially the protein plan of eating more protein and fibrous carbohydrates to tame the appetite and less of the high glycemic insulin inducing carbohydrates, with the added and very much appreciated lists of low glycemic foods, calorie lists, grocery shopping lists, basic exercises at home or in the gym and some recipes. The author relates the same story as the Protein Power and Atkin's Diet of how eating the right foods, you can control your appetite to lose weight and keep it off. But the only topic thic book does not address is the problem of lifestyle, where people who eat (or overeat) to solve or alleviate emotional problems (stress, depression, anger, boredom, etc.) Overall, I rate this book very helpful in explaining in not so technical terms how what we eat affects our appetites and how to control it. This book will help the average person looking to shed wieght and keep it off for life. Take my advice from someone who when in their 20's was as described on page 26 ('We all know people who can seemingly eat as much as they want and never gain weight.') to now, someone who is past menopause packing on the pounds and looking for answers.

Finally someone has provided not only great advice on how to shape-up and lose weight, but also has provided the means of following his great advice! Sure, anyone can tell you that you need to exercise three times a week, but actually making yourself do it is the problem. Heavin has provided a fun, simple, affordable and comfortable women-only environment to get that 30 minute complete body workout that all women of all ages need to stay healthy, to lose weight, and to stay in shape. Thank you Gary!

I am so excited to have found the Curves exercise program. In the past I have walked for exercise, ate low-fat everything and still gained weight. Now I know the secret to my being successful is in strenght-training, creating lean muscle and eating a healthier lower carb diet. I have been doing the Curves exercise program and lost inches. I then realized I needed to boost my metabolism and follow a lower carb diet to lose the unwanted and unhealthly extra weight. In just three months I lost 18 lbs and have had great success in keeping it off. I will never have to watch the scale go up a few pounds and accept it. I now have the information and power to amaze myself! Thank you Curves!

I found Curves interesting in diet philosophy, but impractical in application. How realistic is it to not only eat a set amount of calories per day (which is nothing new), exercise, and eating food from the following 40% protein, 20% carbs, and 40% fat. I found The Phase Plan by Dr. Lola Greene more realistic as it was based on individual differences in what foods to eat instead of a flat 40-20-40 division of food content.

As a francishe owner of two Curves, I am thrilled with the new book. It takes the Curves program to the rest of the world that has not heard of Curves. I have seen the remarkable changes Mr. Heavin's exercise and diet concept has made in the lives or our members since we opened our first club in Jan. 2003. This book combines the smaller paperback version of the first book with the workbook used in our weight loss classes as well as a quick, easy workout designed for women, who for whatever reason, cannot make it in to their local Curves to work out. It is easy to follow and the recipes are great. I followed the diet for six weeks before I began teaching the weight loss class at our club and I lost 12 pounds in six weeks. It really works. The best benefit of the diet program is that once you have lost the weight you do not have to diet permanently if you will just continue your exercise routine three times per week and watch your diet for two days per month. The book gives new hope to those of us who have struggled for years with weight issues.

wow...i have done the curves exercise program for a few months now and have been stunned with the results, inches and pounds falling away all because of the missing link....strength i have a home companion with this great book to help me make sure my eating habits don't sabotage my exercise program...i can feel the weight loss in my clothes and i am feeling better inside now, too....thank you gary heavin for providing me (and all of us women who hate to exercise) a way to stay healthy and fit the rest of our lives without having to live in the gym....and without having to diet forever!!!!

As a physician, I have always known about the research on weight loss and metabolism, but I have seen no one who puts it together like Mr. Heavin. It's so elementary that I hit my forehead wondering why I didn't make the connection! I'm glad to recommend Curves' book and the Curves facilities to my patients. If this book is anything like the paperback that he privately published a few years ago, it's sure to be a blockbuster!
