Overview

Cut to the Quick: Julian Kestrel #1 by Kate Ross

Julian Kestrel is the walking definition of a Regency-era dandy. He cares about little beyond the perfection of his tailoring, he lives for the bon mot, and his life has the specific gravity and the fleeting charm of a soap-bubble. At least that's what he'd like you to think. In fact, it rather suits Kestrel to be perpetually underestimated, particularly when as in this instance his weekend at a glamorous country estate is spoiled by a dead girl's body being found in his bed.

A very well-written and thoroughly enjoyable mystery set in early 19thC London. Julian Kestrel is a dandy, a young man in polite society well-known as first in fashion and universally emulated, though none really know much about him. A guest at a country manor, he returns from riding to discover a young woman in his bed, dead. The characters are well-drawn and engaging, the atmosphere of the period well-portrayed, the clues thoroughly dropped, the plot not unnecessarily twisted, and the ending satisfying. Kestrel is a wonderful lead character – I look forward to the other books in the series.
