Overview

A Cutthroat Business by Jenna Bennett

Book 1 in the Savannah Martin mystery series. Savannah has always been a good girl, doing what was expected and fully expecting life to fall into place in its turn. But when her perfect husband turns out to be a lying, cheating slimeball - and bad in bed to boot - Savannah kicks the jerk to the curb and embarks on life on her own terms. With a new apartment, a new career, and a brand new outlook on life, she's all set to take the world by storm. If only the world would stop throwing her curveballs...

Everyone has warned new-minted realtor Savannah Martin that real estate is a cutthroat business. But Savannah doesn't think she's supposed to take the warning literally ... until an early morning phone call sends her to an empty house on the 'bad' side of town, where she finds herself standing over the butchered body of a competitor, face to face with the boy her mother always warned her about.

Rafe Collier is six feet three inches of testosterone and trouble; tall, dark, and dangerous, with a murky past and no future-not the kind of guy a perfect Southern Belle should want to tangle with. In any way. But wherever Savannah turns, there he is, and making no bones about what he wants from her.

Now Savannah must figure out who killed real estate queen Brenda Puckett, make a success of her new career, and avoid getting killed-or kissed-by Rafe, all before the money in her savings account runs out and she has to go back to selling make-up at the mall.

A heroine in over her head and a hero worthy of Stephanie Plum! This is a delightfully fun southern romp. When real-estate agent Savannah Martin is called to show a home to a client on the spur-of-the-moment she doesn't expect to run into her home-town's bad-boy extraordinaire, Rafe Collier . Together, they don't expect to find the dead body of the agent who was supposed to meet Rafe. Savannah knows it's not ladylike to be too curious about things that don't concern her, but she just can't seem to help herself. It doesn't take long before gets herself in over her head, with Rafe and the killer, or are they one and the same?

Whether writing as Jennie Bentley in the DIY cozy mystery series, or as Jenna Bennett in the Savannah Martin series, all of her books are a delightful reading experience. A Cutthroat Business stars newly minted real estate agent, Savannah Martin--a fun character with humor and a deliciously twisted outlook on life. She's a blend of true southern elegance and down-to-earth common sense. Plus, the mystery keeps you guessing! I'll be reading all of this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed Savannah's sense of humor, her practicality, and street smarts while reading this book. Her side comments to the reader are a treat. This is a true mystery with a definite nasty twist here and there. Worth your time!

I enjoyed this mystery. It did seem like the book couldn't decide if it was a mystery or a romance. The romance was left sudoended. However, the mystery wrapped up nicely.

This is a cozy mystery, wrapped up in 'Southern Hospitality'. Savannah is a Southern Belle, who went to Finishing School, but ended up working behind a make-up counter. Following her divorce, she decides to re-train and throws all she has into earning her realtor's license. Being at the bottom of the pack means that she will have to work hard to earn her place, and make her first sale. An opportunity seems to arrive when one of her rivals doesn't show for an appointment. The client she was meeting rings the office, and Savannah arranges to go instead. This leads to finding the dead body of her colleague and more twists and turns ensue. This was smoothly written and the mystery wasn't so much of 'Whodunnit', but 'Whydunnit'! Rafe is an alpha male, with a bad boy reputation and a good heart, who is seen as beneath Savannah for a number of reasons, not least of which being his birth! Todd is a snob, a lawyer who thinks the world owes him, once again due to his birth. Savannah is somewhere in the middle. She thinks she is a rebel because she spends time with Rafe. If you are looking for a cosy mystery set in mid-Tennessee, with one brilliant alpha male, one fop, and an always fainting leading lady, then this is just the book for you. * Verified Purchase on Amazon * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

*No Spoilers* Although my least favorite book in the series, this book is a sweet (and very worth reading) introduction to Savannah Martin and her desire act the part of a perfect southern belle while breaking out in the world after a nasty divorce has left her emotionally changed. She meets Rafe who both empowers and mystifies her as she tries to come to grips with how little she knows about him and how interested she is in his life. Their banter alone makes this series worth reading. It is witty and heartfelt and lovely.

Didn't like the main character, Savannah and couldn't really get into the story. By the end, I almost didn't care who the killer was. Would not recommend this book.

Savannah is a little too nosy (into everyones's business) for a supposed new Realtor. But still a fun, fast read. Wish the author would have included more than one restaurant in the town. That got a little old. Would sure like to see the Detective Grimaldi (sp) offer Savannah a job! She seems to have detective skills!!!!

In the well written first book of this cozy mystery series, Savannah has a lot to learn about the real world, but she is well on her way, and a sexy rebel from her past may be just the man to teach her. The man of her mother's dream has divorced Savannah, and she is nearing the end of the money from the settlement. The real estate business is pretty cutthroat even within her office, but she needs the money and likes her boss well enough to hang on despite the jerks who work there. She has not sold a house in the months that she has been a real estate agent, so she is willing to do all the work it takes to make a sale. When she gets a Saturday call about another relator missing an appointment, she races to the house and the waiting stranger. She has no idea that this house will lead her to a relationship with a gorgeous acquaintance from the wrong side of the tracks, a needy teenager, a needy old woman, as well as a murder and a murder attempt on her life. Life may never be the same, but maybe that is a good thing. I feel, as Savannah seems to, that Rafe is putting on a show for some reason, and I can't wait to find out more about him.
