Both the Author and Illustrator tackle this sensitive subject with the respect it deserves. The illustrations are realistic. This is a serious topic which shows what can happen at war. What I love about it is that it is a hopeful story that focuses on the love between a father and son, and the adoration and respect the boy has for his dad, who is a real-life hero.

Daddy, Can You See the Moon? deals with the difficult topic of a parent being deployed and returning home wounded. Throughout his father’s deployment the main character, a young boy, remains strong and helps his family. He feels connected to his father by looking at the moon and knowing his dad will also be looking up – something his father suggested before he left. The father returns home after losing both his legs. The illustrations are realistic, so sensitive children might be more affected by them than if they had been cartoonish, but the style suits the subject matter well. The book is hopeful despite the serious topic.

Everyone deserves to have stories they can relate to. DADDY CAN YOU SEE THE MOON gives military families something they can connect to, and opens doors for communicating and healing. It is also eye-opening for readers that are not aware of what life is like for families when a member goes to war.

With so many people in service, their children need books to help them understand and get through the period when their parents are gone and also when they return, particularly if they have sustained some injury. This book tackles those issues in a soothing and calm way, making it a useful resource for military families. Please note that there are a couple of possibly traumatic scenes illustrated, so be sure to look through the book before sharing it with a child.

This is an incredible story that speaks to the heart about a military father and his young son. The story sends the powerful message that sometimes, when difficult things happen in life, faith, trust, hope, love ... and the help of the moon ... can be empowering and healing. A must-read for all!

Gayle's story had me in tears from the first line. Daddy Can You See the Moon is a story that touches the heart. If you have experienced any type of separation or, recovery this story will hit home and heart. Clearly a must for kids dealing with separations from daddy, or any parent. Her writing is real, heartfelt. "Moon will stand to be your guard," says it all. Hope and heart are this story. The illustrations by Carlos have a tenderness that are bright and easily felt, eyes locking, spot on! Thanks Gayle and Carlos!

Daddy Can You See the Moon? is such an important story! It makes accessible to children the sorrow and sadness that is so often part of having a parent in the military. The symbolism of the moon unifying father and son, and the hopeful ending are so important for kids. The illustrations are beautifully done, and I especially loved the spread of father and so. Both gazing at the moon!

Daddy, Can You See the Moon? is a story of love and hope. The main character's military father is leaving home to go overseas and fight. Throughout their long time apart, the boy looks at the moon each night, knowing his daddy is looking at it, too. When his father his injured, the boy finds his own strength to help his father recover. Beautifully written, this book brought tears to my eyes. I highly recommend it for readers of all ages.

Daddy, Can You See the Moon? handles a serious topic in a sensitive and simple way making it the perfect book to explain separation to young children. When a boy's father is deployed, he tells his son that they will connect every night by looking at the moon. Over time the moon waxes and wanes, but the father and son's love never wavers. But when his father returns seriously injured, they must find a way to bridge another gap. Their strong family bond helps them both come to terms with the new situation. Military families and families of wounded warriors will find the handling of the topic well done. Krause has a deft touch and the story remains true to the harsh realities of war without becoming bogged down in sentiment.

While Johnny's dad is serving across seas in the military, Johnny stays connected with him by looking at the moon, knowing his father is looking at the same moon and thinking about him, too. But when Johnny's dad is injured and comes home, Johnny's not sure if the man who worked to keep our country safe will ever be the same. Over time, Johnny's dad learns to use his new prosthetic legs, and Johnny continues to view his dad as a hero and role model. An important book for the children of injured soldiers, and a heartwarming book about heroes.
