This was the first book I read from Donald Goines and I must admit it was a very good read. I found it to be very short. but for the most part it was a good read..daddy cool and his need to protect his daughter and her need to feel grown-up and his relationship with his wife and step-sons. I think I would be reading more of donald goines books..

Daddy Cool. This is the first novel I have ever read in the old school books series and It did'nt let me down. This is the life of a hit man named Larry Jackson, better known as Daddy Cool. He knew his job and tried his very best to keep his contract killer life away from his household life but, to no avail. His daughter janet gets put on whore's row by her supposed boyfriend, his lousy stepsons starts ripping people off,and he and his wife shirley are having issues.Mr. Goines keeps it real through this whole story. all the characters are very real to life, like for example Daddy Cool's old lady Shirley. Now Shirley reminds me strongly of this Woman I know and used to work with in the cafeteria of West Gasdsen High School back in Greensboro Florida, by the name of Melissa Jordan. This book and other books in this series truly are the literary equivalent of the Blaxploitation novels.

This book takes you on a dramatic ride through the life of a ruthless hit man who tries to keep his business life seperate from his family life. The beginning of the book will vividly discribe how smart cunning and vindictive this hit man can be.Beside his job of killing people larry johnson deals with inner emotional problems and a family who hates him because of his anger and abuss toward them. This book will suprise and shock you with twist, turns, and vilont actions.

I believe this is the fifth book that I've read from Goines and for awhile, I was starting to wonder 'Why are people so into him?' The last two books I read from him were not good. But this one, wow! I didn't want to put it down. It was an easy, believable read all the way through. Ofcourse, Goines is on point with the dialogue, gives me a reasonable amount of descriptions, and the plot was smooth, but that's all his stories. But this one did something that a few have not--he didn't add unnecessary characters, his characters developed accordingly, and they were all well-rounded. This is the story of a hustler/killer who can't handle his daughter as a prostitute and his stepsons as beginner criminals. He can destroy everything else that bothers OTHER people but can't seem to handle his own problems.

I think it was great like all his other books, but i didn't like about it at the end he left you hanging with a million questions. Personally, I have read ten of his books and i think he is a great author.

I ONLY GAVE THIS BOOK 3 STARS. THIS BOOK LEAVES YOU LOOKING FOR MORE. WHAT IS THE OUTCOME WITH JANET, DADDY COOL, BUDDY, & SHIRLEY? THERE JUST SEEMS TO BE ALOT OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS. MAYBE GOINES IS SAVING THEM FOR DADDY COOL PART II.

THIS BOOK WAS ALRIGHT. I EXPECTED IT TO BE GREAT SINCE EVERYONE WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW GOOD THE AUTHOR BOOKS ARE. THE BOOK MADE ME UPSET BECAUSE JANET LEFT HER NICE HOUSE TO LIVE IN A DUMP AND SELL HER BODY FOR NICKLES AND DIMES. SHE COULD HAVE GOT ANYTHING FROM HER DAD.

I read this book in a 1 1/2 days. When it ended I wanted more. A man who lived by the steets tried to keep his family away from them especially his daughter. She ends up getting caught up. He gave his daughter everything and in the end it was too late.
