Overview

Dan Rooney: My 75 Years With the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL by Dan Rooney, David F. Halaas, Andrew E. Masich

In 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers will turn seventy-five years old. So will Dan Rooney. In Dan Rooney , the owner talks about growing up on Pittsburgh's North Side, competing with Johnny Unitas for top high school quarterback honors in western Pennsylvania, learning the ropes of big-time sports from his father and mentor, Art Rooney (“the Chief”), helping to shape the modern NFL into America's all-consuming passion, and forging the Steelers into a Super Bowl-winning dynasty. He also speaks frankly about winning and losing, and discusses his relationships with family, coaches, players, owners, NFL commissioners, the media, and the fans-“Steeler Nation.” It's all here: the difficult contract negotiations, controversial decisions, memorable teams, and many behind-the-scenes stories of the growth of America's favorite game. A dedicated family man and proud native of Pittsburgh, this chairman of one of the most successful franchises ever reveals the dynamics that have made him such a respected owner in the NFL.

If you are part of the Steeler Nation and have not read this book you are missing out on Mr. Rooneys hands on history of the team and players. I could not put it down once I got started.

A nice retrospective on one of the most successful franchises in sports over the past 35 years. The Steelers were equally as inept in their first 40 years, and that is covered too.
Insights into many key moments in Steeler history - founding the team, cutting Johhny U, hiring Noll, Cowher & Tomlin, drafting of the Hall of Famers that dominated the 70's, passing on Dan Marino, and more. No big surprises, but an interesting, worthwhile read, especially for NFL fans and particularly any member of Steeler Nation.

I could not put this one down. Even if you are not a novel reader, Steeler fans and just NFL fans in general will learn so much by reading this book. Dan Rooney has done so much for the NFL since the 'beginning' of the NFL. A true Cop-A-Setic for the game. Ha Ha. Seriously, if you love NFL football, buy this book. The best. A true NFL fan 'even clowns fans' should read this book, it will give you a brief moment of the feeling of succsss. Go Steelers.

Although Mr. Rooney's story gets bogged down when he moves into his immediate families trips and vacations, overall the book is a great insight into the NFL and one of the most respected and successful franchises in the league. If your a Steelers or an NFL fan you'll enjoy it and if your a casual fan you'll get an excellent tutorial on the founding and growth of America's favorite sport.
