When a little brown wren of an Englishwoman bursts into Jamie Heyworth's private Hell and asks for help he mistakes her for the black crow of death. Why not? He fled to Rome and sits in despair with nothing left to sell and no reason to get up in the morning. Behind him lie disgrace, shame, and secrets he is desperate to keep.
Nora Haley comes to Rome at the bidding of her dying brother who has an unexpected legacy. Never in her sunniest dreams did Nora expect Robert to leave her a treasure, a tiny black-eyed niece with curly hair and warm hugs. Nora will do anything to keep her, even hire a shabby, drunken major as an interpreter.
Jamie can't let Nora know the secrets he has hidden from everyone, even his closest friends. Nora can't trust any man who drinks. She had enough of that in her marriage. Either one, however, will dare anything for the little imp that keeps them together, even enter a sham marriage to protect her.
And don't miss Dangerous Works, where Jamie first appeared.

Jamie Heyworth has run. Run from his friends, run from his family, run his responsibilities all in belief that his family and friends were better off without the shame of his actions. However, he can’t run from himself or his secrets. Secrets that if they came to light would have him losing his family and friends anyway. Hiding in Rome his routine his drink and lots of it but even drink cannot chase away his despair. Nora Haley “escapes” from her victor father to Rome to attend her dying brother. Finding she has a niece she needs an interpreter to help her with the language to gain custody. Soon she learns that language is not her only barrier; the fact that she’s an unmarried female does not help her case. As Jamie reluctantly agrees to help Nora can he keep his secrets and his heart from her? Can Nora work with Jamie as he is and not lose her heart? As Nora’s quest to gain custody of her niece unfolds who will actually be helping the other? Another wonderfully written tale by Caroline Warfield. These characters will have your sympathy, your smiles and at time wanting to smack sense into one or the other.
This is the third Caroline Warfield novel that I have read and it was just as good as the first two. This is the story of Jamie, Nora and Isabella. Jamie is running from his past and Nora is running from her father. Nora hires Jamie to be her translator in her quest to obtain custody of her niece, Isabella, upon the death of her brother. This story is so well crafted. My heart ached for both Jamie and Nora and Caroline made be feel their pain of their relationships, events and experiences. She also made my heart sing as they found their passion for love and each other. I especially loved all of the secondary characters and the setting in Italy. Once I was drawn in by the opening lines, I could not put this one down. As I read the last word, I was sad that the book had to end. I want to know more about Jamie and Nora's relationship and I want to watch Isabella grow up.
