Daring Fate (Silver Tip Pack, #1) by Megan Erickson

We all have tragic backstories in today’s world…

I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.

When I’m taken to meet Dare, the alpha of the Silver Tip pack, I’m sure I’m about to lose my throat. The last thing I expect is for the Alpha to recognize me as his fated mate. No way is he going to let me go now, and I still have to find a way to rescue my sister.

As I plot my escape to save her, I find that if I leave, Dare could be killed by power-hungry members of his pack. And now he’s more to me than my fated mate—my heart is involved. With time ticking by on my sister’s life, I have to make a choice I never thought I’d face—my sister’s life or my mate’s? That’s if I can survive the undead shifters intent on killing me first...

4.5 stars — I don’t tend to stretch my wings outside contemporary romance often, but often when I do I wonder why I don’t explore more! This would be a prime example of that. I loved the odd dystopian world that Ms. Erickson created, with Weres and Werewolves and humans wiped into extinction! And make it an M/M to boot? Oh yeah, I’m in. One of the things I loved about this book in particular is that while it was an M/M, the fact that there were gay relationships was NEVER discussed. It was just normal, no one even blinked. I hadn’t been expecting that, and that was kind of fun. It kind of made me wish for a world like that…you know, minus zombie Weres and human extinction. I was sucked in pretty much from the beginning, and I enjoyed both Dare and Reese almost right away. I think it took me a bit longer to fall in love with them, but I probably fell in love with them as they fell in love with each other. I liked that while this was a “fated mates” story, where it was an instantaneous attraction that had a supernatural element, it didn’t mean they loved each other right away. I actually enjoy insta-love more in paranormal stories, where an excuse can be given for it. But I did appreciate that the author still had them fall in love despite the whole soul mates thing. Reese’s backstory was truly tragic. He went through SO FREAKING much in such a young life, and I LOVED how dedicated he was to his siblings, and you could feel their love for each other. I enjoyed reading the conflict in him, between the obvious undeniable connection he had with Dare, and what he was being to feel for him, and wanting to go back and save his sister. I mean, he made a terrible choice, but I did understand his flawed logic and how he came to that conclusion…he just needed a smack. I totally called how that whole conflict was going to play out (or at least the precipitating action), but it still hit me right in the feels. I will admit that occasionally Reese was just a bit too oblivious? naive? for my tastes. First it was him making the choices *for* Dare, and then it was not understanding what Dare was doing. It was a bit aggravating, but there was enough else going on that I didn’t dwell on it. Dare was so completely different, but it didn’t mean my heart didn’t tug for him as well. I couldn’t even imagine the weight of responsibility he felt, and I LOVED how seriously he took his role as alpha and pack leader. It wasn’t something he abused or took for granted…he learned from the past, and really tried to meld together the pack’s need for safety and sustainability with trying to figure out the Nowere situation. He was not without his own flaws, also making decisions FOR Reese instead of talking to him, but again, there was enough else going on that it didn’t bother me as much as it could have. Besides Dare and Reese, this book excelled in an excellent secondary cast of characters. Not just characters that I’m sure will get their own story, but even ones that probably won’t. I LOVED Reese’s brother Jude…he was young, but you could see him maturing even in just those few weeks. We only met a few other werewolves for a brief period, but I enjoyed Reese’s sister Selene too. I LOVED Dare’s guard, from his incorrigible brother Bay, to the hilarious Vaughan, to the down to earth Rua, and the gentle giant G. They all played little roles that really rounded out the story. And then there was Kati and Mav! I didn’t expect to enjoy Mav

This story is a mix of paranormal, dystopian and erotic romance. A disease has killed off all pure humans. Two groups, Weres and werewolves, weren’t eradicated, but some became zombies that eat and infect others so the current world is all about pack survival. Some packs have great alphas and others not so much. To Dare the most important thing is his family. His brother and sister are all he has left. They’ve not had good experiences in this post-apocalyptic world. He stumbles upon another pack and turns out he’s their leader’s mate. Dare has to figure out this rare experience and who to trust. His loved ones’ lives depend on it. This book is full of sexy M/M scenes. It’s super alpha and delicious, and it’s really great with the sweetest too. I’m a big zompoc fan so I would have liked more on the Noweres, but Daring Fate is definitely worth reading.

It's no secret by now that I am a big fan of Megan Erickson, so when she said she was going to be publishing a PNR romance, I was intrigued. And I am so so so glad she embarked on this path! I loved "Daring Fate" and the world she has created here. I am a big fan of PNR books and I loved seeing the differences she brought to the table. I am eager for more books in this universe and learning more about the world in which the werewolves, weres and noweres roam. The lore of these books is unique and interesting and gives a fresh look at the world of werewolves and essentially zombies. I loved Reese and Dare and watching them learn to like and eventually love in each aside from the True Mate bond that forced them together in the first place. Their relationship grew and evolved into something stronger and wonderful to read. I LOVED the supporting characters and small side stories and I cannot wait to read about those characters down the line (nudge nudge, Megan)! I am hooked on this series and this world and I am excited to see where it goes.

A novel worth of a MOVIE ADAPTATION. Riveting, sexy, & an action-packed story. I've never been a fan of shifters' stories. TBH, I actually find them silly. Then when one of my fave authors, Megan Erickson herself, announced that she'll have an upcoming story on that genre, I got conflicted. Like, how I was supposed to read something like that. But I guess, the moment I realized that every book that she created never in a single moment failed to amaze me, that notion of not trying instantly flew out of the freakin' window. *laughs* So. Shall we enter the world of Daring Fate? *puts my hand out* After you. *winks* Being Alpha of the Silver Tip Pack, Dare does his best to be a figure of authority without making his pack members cower in the corner whenever he gets past them. He prefers to maintain the harmony they have on their pack rather than do something despicable that'll definitely cost the life of everyone. His loyalty to his members especially to those who are very close to him is something not to be argued with. One can say that he is indeed born to be a leader. A man that fights for the life of the people he cared about. A man that will do everything to make his mate happy. But what will it take to crumble the rigid foundation of principles that Dare has ever known? Reese, the werewolf who barely came out alive of the freakin' hellhole he came from. Evidently, he is a very strong man. He has been through a lot since he was taken in a place which was unbeknownst to him, will bring a lot of heartaches that he didn't know if he could ever take. He has been fighting for their freedom since then. He had to make decisions that were so hard he thought he'd be crushed into pieces. Now that he & his brother are in a safe place, he's yet to find the peace of mind he has been craving knowing that his sister is still in imminent danger. His heart is like being ripped into two on deciding which should come first, his family or the love of his life? Loved how the author played the conflict in this story so well. The story, the characters, the emotions felt real that it cascades through me effortlessly. The way she'd built the characters from being weak to being strong & from being strong to being stronger without making it a cliche story only magnifies the greatness of this story. The action-packed scenes were intense and it feels like I was watching it in big screen. The other characters also played great roles in this story. The plot itself was riveting like you'll be holding your breath before the next thing happen. This is truly ASTONISHING & a novel that will rival any shifters' stories that had ever been written. You're a champ, Miss Megan. I never knew I could learn to love a shifters' story this hard. Thank you. You proved again that you really are a versatile author.

I'm not usually one for shifter/werewolf books, but knowing it was Megan, I had to read it. I really liked Reese and Dare. They seem so opposite that it was amusing to see them figure out the mating thing. There are some great secondary characters. I especially loved Bay and I can't wait to see his story in book 2. The plot was a bit darker than I was expecting, but I enjoyed it. The push and pull between Reese and Dare surprisingly didn't get old; instead, I thrived on their bickering. Overall, an interesting take on fate and mating with a satisfying ending. I'll definitely be reading book 2. **Huge thanks to Megan for providing the arc free of charge**

It would seem that paranormal romance is on the rise again - or maybe I'm just finding that I'm reading them for the first time in a long time. Megan Erickson is one of my drop everything authors, so even though paranormal is not my go to genre, I had to check it out. Daring Fate is the first book in the Silver Tip Pack Series. It sets the stage for this new dystopian society where a virus has wiped out humans and werewolves, weres, and noweres take over. I must admit I got a bit tripped up on the difference between werewolves and weres, but the attraction between the main characters totally stole my attention. The moment Reese and Dare meet, they sense that they are true mates. I love this primal attraction. The way the smell of the other person pulls them together, the way they instinctively need to be close. And I love that it is two MEN fated as mates. Gah. The attraction between Reese and Dare is OFF THE CHARTS HOT. But fated mates apparently have to learn to like and trust each other, and their situation is a bit complicated. I loved watching these two fall in love. I loved their chemistry. I loved the alpha aspect of Dare. I can't wait to read more in this series!! Bottom line: great start to a new paranormal m/m romance series!!

Megan Erickson has written my favorite shifter story to date. I love Paranormal Shifter Romance but more often than not I DNF the samples. Usually, I end up finding them cheesy. Well, there’s nothing cheesy here, my friends. What we have here is an intense, gritty romance. What I loved: -The plot. The author created a post-apocalyptic world in which humans no longer exist. There are three species left: weres, werewolves, and noweres (which are pretty much zombie wolves). Reese is a young wolf determined to save who is left of his family and take them back to his homeland. Except he gets caught, beaten, and left for dead. It’s after that he meets his mate, Dare. Dare is the alpha of his pack, and despite coming across as hard, he has his pack’s best interest at heart. -Reese. He’s young, but he is smart and full of heart. He’ll do whatever he needs to do to protect those he loves even at his expense. -Dare. What was there not to love about this powerful were? Book Boyfriend Alert! -The supporting characters. Jude, G, Bay, Mav, Cati. These characters were well developed and were an integral part of the story. I’m hoping we’ll be getting some books in the future for them…. -The chemistry between Reese and Dare was equal parts romantic and scorching hot. I swear I could feel my iPad getting hot. LOL -The pace. It was smooth and fast paced. I had to force myself to slow down because I didn’t want the book to end. It was unputdownable. -Narration. Dual POV

Only Megan Erickson can make me read a book about shifters and completely fall in love with the world and the characters. When she first announced this book I was like “mmmm, Seriously?” and then when I read read the synopsis I was like “mmmm okay okay I’m liking this” and when I read it I was like “I love this, I freaking love this, I want more, I need more, please NOW NOW NOW” Yeap, it is that good!! So, Dare is the Alpha of the Silver Tip pack and they are Were which are bigger and stronger that werewolves. Reese is a werewolf who has been left to die by his pack. One thing leads to another and Reese is held captive in the Silver Tip pack compound and when they take him to meet the Dare something happens. Dare recognizes him as his true mate. Meaning that they are meant to be together but not necessarily in love. From the beginning this book captures your attention, the world is so well described, Megan does an amazing job at letting us know how things are and what means what and the rest of the important stuff you just find out throughout the book which in my opinion makes the reading experience more enjoyable. Then you have amazingly crafted character, Dare is intimidating but he also has a big heart and you can tell right away that he cares about his pack and only wants what is best for all of them. And Reese also has a big heart, he is trying to protect the ones he loves at all cost. Their relationship is explosive from the get go, I don’t really know how to describe it, I means it hot and kind of dirty but also loving and tender at the same time. I don’t know I just know that is good and I loved it. The second characters are equally fascinating, Jude, G, Bay and the rest of Dares immediate commanders are all interesting and I wish we can get a closer look in upcoming books. Really just do yourself a favor and read this book, you won’t regret it.

Originally part of the Whitethroat Pack in Astria, Reese and his family made the trek to Eury after Noweres came and ravaged the only home they'd ever known. Instead of finding protection with the Bluefoot Pack, Reese's life is changed forever when he and his younger siblings are enslaved. For ten years they suffered, but Reese wants his siblings to be free of the tyrannical rule of Bluefoot Alpha. Unfortunately, their attempt to escape is foiled and Reese is beaten severely and left for dead at the hands of any Noweres wandering outside Bluefoot territory. Rather than end up with Noweres, however, Reese and his younger brother Jude end up with the Weres of the Silver Tip Pack, led by their Alpha Dare. To complicate matters, Dare and Reese immediately realize they're each other's True Mate. Reese may be tied to Dare, but he still has a sister to go back for. Can he risk his mating for her? Dare has heard about True Mates but never thought he'd have one of his own, and he never expected his mate to be a werewolf. They're being two different species adds layers of complexity to an already unknown situation. Reese isn't as submissive as Dare's other partners in the past, and Dare finds himself oddly intrigued by the feisty little wolf. The pull to his True Mate is unlike anything he's ever experienced before, but Dare needs to be cautious. He and Reese know nothing much about each other and he knows Reese doesn't trust him or his pack, not after his experience with his last one. With a cousin being insubordinate and chomping at the bit to challenge him, Dare cannot show any sign of weakness. But that's exactly what Reese is turning out to be--the one weakness that Dare doesn't want to get away from. Can he convince his wolf that he has a place in his pack or will fate intervene again? Werefore, erm, wherefore art thou, my Werewolves, Weres, and Noweres? Why, right here in the world that Megan Erickson has created in that ingenious mind of hers. I was so freakin' fascinated by everything this book had to show me and I went for it, hook, line, and sinker. The relationship between Dare and Reese evolved from its tense and distrustful beginnings to the kind that exemplified the kind of intense tenacity I pictured in my head as far as a True Mating was concerned. When these two give in to their baser instincts, it's always hot and I'm bothered in the best ways possible. But this story is also about family, both the kind that ties you through blood and the kind that you find with the right pack. It's also about home and what it means to you--is it a specific location or more of a concept or idea? For a first foray in paranormal romance, Daring Fate is a five-starred effort. ♥

I want to start this review off by saying that this is not my normal genre that I read. But, every once in a while, I will make an exception and dabble into the M/M world…. Daring Fate is an exciting first book in an all new series by author Megan Erickson. I have read lots of her traditional romance novels, but this is the first one of her M/M novels that I’ve read. And I have to tell you, Megan Erickson has done an amazing job. Not only has she delivered a brilliant and sexy romance, but she’s also taken the plunge into the paranormal world. She has knocked it out of the park in my eyes. Daring Fate is well written and totally exceeded my expectations. This story sucked me in from the very beginning and I couldn’t help but loose myself in this intriguing world that the author created. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the paranormal elements and LOVED the idea of a True Mate Bond. The instant bond between our two characters intrigued me and had me dying to know more. Their chemistry was undeniable and loved watching their relationship transform. Daring Fate not only entertained me, but it memorized me. I just couldn’t get enough and was unable to put this book down. This story is everything I never knew I needed. It’s filled with angst, romance, sexy good times and fantastic paranormal elements. I think this series is off to a wonderful start. I am so glad that I decided to take a chance on a different type of romance and I look forward to continuing on with this series and seeing where it will go next.

Megan Erickson is trying her hand at all sorts of genres these days, and this is the first in her new m/m paranormal series that features a dystopian future where humans have been wiped out by a virus that had other devastating consequences. There are only three intelligent and partial human species left – the Werewolves that can shift between human and wolf form; the Weres that can exist in human, wolf or upright wolf/human hybrid form; and the Noweres that are undead Weres (zombie Weres, if you will, who are stuck in the wolf/human hybrid form). The Weres and Werewolves live in a state of tense and untrusting alliances in their bid to defeat Noweres advances into their territories. When Reese and his brother Jude, both Werewolves, becomes the prisoner of Dare, alpha of the Silver Tip Were pack their imprisonment is compounded by Dare and Reese's instant recognition that they are True Mates. Reese is desperate to escape in order to rescue his sister Selene from the clutches of Xan, alpha of the Bluefoot Werewolf pack that had thrown him and Jude out, leaving them to their fate. Though Dare had rescued them before the Noweres could get at them, he doesn't trust Reese despite his intense attraction to him. Once they've mated, there is no going back as anything that happens to one will happen to the other, and the pain when one is separated from the other is intense. With the fate of Dare and Selene in his hands, whom will Reese choose? The story starts off dramatically and doesn't let up, with some excellent worldbuilding right from the start. The key characters are introduced and the different packs relationships to each other are explained without being too overwhelming, the story building on itself as it goes along. Reese and Jude are prisoners of Dare and the Silver Tip Pack but it's not long before the relationship between Reese and Dare heats up and the sex scenes between them are visceral and intense (and pretty steamy!) Reese, Jude and his sister Selene have a tragic past, their Whitethroat pack having been decimated by Noweres and their parents having led them to the Bluefoot pack. The tyrannical leader of that pack, Xan, had killed their parents on sight and enslaved the three siblings. They had planned to escape finally, when Xan had gotten wind of their plans, beaten Reese and left him for the Noweres. Jude had escaped and gone for help to the Silver Tip Pack, the only one nearby in an alliance with the Bluefoots, and leading them to their current situation. But Reese, while he might be mated to Dare, doesn't trust him enough to tell him about his sister, still enslaved and soon to be forced into mating with Xan. He's soon torn between loyalty to her and Jude, and his new place in the Silver Tip Pack. As well, there are rumors that his Whitethroat Pack in Astria has rebuilt and he feels an intense longing to go home. But leaving Dare would mean leaving the Silver Tip pack vulnerable to inside attacks from Dare's enemies with Dare weakened by Reese's absence. Things soon come to a head and there are lots of action packed scenes mixed in with the sexy ones as Reese and Dare's bond strengthens on route to their happy ending. There are some open ended plot lines left for some of the other characters to leave you wanting more. I enjoyed everything about this story, and I can't wait to continue the series!
