Dark Horses by John W. Russell

When she rides Dantes into the winner’s circle for him at Newmarket Racecourse in England, Fiona Kent becomes involved with the enigmatic British aristocrat, Viscount Adrian Harrington. Fiona is not only a talented jockey, but she is beautiful and vulnerable. Her relationship with Adrian becomes strained by a series of violent events. She becomes inextricably tied to Adrian, knowing he is working secretly in international affairs for the British government. A brief respite from danger and a growing affection for an American veterinarian, Mark McLennan, further complicates Fiona’s life. But Mark becomes a false haven from danger, and only murder can resolve the affair.

Loved my copy of DARK HORSES, which I think is the best racing thriller I have ever read. I liked the girl, but best of all was the twist in the tail: I thought I knew how it would pan out. I liked the detail of the race riding and the life of a jockey, and the contrast between American and English racing.

As a first effort by author John Russell, this story is captivating in that it takes the reader into the complexity of thoroughbred racing with an endearing honesty. Once one of racing's premier trainers, Russell now writes with a clarity of style that is both authentic and refreshing. The story is suspenseful with multiple plots leading to a dramatic conclusion, with characters that are obviously inspired by experience in the racing world. Only Dick Francis compares as a writer of mysteries with racing as a backdrop. I look forward to more from this author.

Like a good horse, this book starts slowly while we learn about Fiona's world but the story gathers momentum down the stretch and finishes with a rush. A fascinating look at the possibilities of corruption and conflict in the mysterious world of horseracing. A well crafted story and a most enjoyable piece of fiction that cannot be too far from the truth. Only Dick Francis - who also spent his life in thoroughbred racing and brings to his books authenticity rarely found in fiction - compares with author John Russell, previously one of the nations leading trainers.

A mystery that starts in a trot but ends at full gallop. Thoroughbred racing with a voice from the inside brings a plausible plot that isn't resolved until the final chapter. Thoroughly enjoyable first novel from an articulate author.

Artfully crafted mystery, the reader is drawn into the shadows of the underworld of racing Thoroughbred horses in a unique style. Full of action, emotion and suspense. Take this one to the beach or curl up in your fav armchair and hold on.

Thoroughbred racing from the inside with a girl everyone should meet! The plot is as complex as Fiona Kent.
