Overview

Seanna Raines is on a journey of self-discovery. Only her search does not include college applications or finding a cool summer job. After killing Samuel Bolvayne, the 'man' she fears and loves, Seanna is not looking for who she is, but rather what she will become.

Samuel spent countless lifetimes trying to forge a companion like himself, but his previous attempts were considered failures. Until Seanna. She is his first true success... and his ultimate undoing. Now, without Samuel to guide her, Seanna is lost. To survive, she needs to find out what her transformation means: super strength, the ability to smell human emotions, and an ever-increasing need to devour human souls. Seanna travels to Samuel's earthly homeland, along the coast of South Africa, in search of answers. Here, she encounters several of his failed experiments, who claim to know the truth. These abominations lead her into a sinister world of chaos and destruction, where the birthplace of evil is revealed.

Seanna clings to the last piece of her humanity while struggling to accept her feelings for Samuel and what she has done to him. Just as Seanna embraces her fate, she is forced to choose between life as an immortal with the one she loves or sacrifice it all to save a world that does not deserve saving.

Dark Migration is about a girl, and a boy, but not your traditional type of girl and boy. It is an atmospheric story with an unusual--but compelling--cast of characters. The monsters in this book are richly imagined, turning our eons-old lore on its head and creating a different slant on our beginning. Ms. Campbell has really delivered in this sequel to her first book, Butterfly Harvest.

Amazing book- this is everything a New Adult novel should be! Seanna's quest to discover who (and what) she is speaks to every new adult's need to find their place in the world. Her struggle to reconcile her human side with the monster within is compelling, and the dark world she discovers on her journey is unique, fantastic, and thrilling. I read this book first, even though it is the second book in the series. I slid into the world and understood the conflict easily even without having read the first book. However, you can bet I've got Volume 1 on my to-read list now!

At first, I was lost in the book, since I had not read the first one...but Ms. Campbell does a wonderful job at catching you up on things you don't know happened. I do believe I will be going back and reading book one so I can be totally caught up for the next book. I am glad I took the chance on this book and would recommend reading the books back to back so you don't have to play catch up like I did. I did receive this book free in exchange for an honest review. I hope you enjoyed it like I did!

"Are you afraid of the dark? Dark Migration starts out with Seanna Raines reliving her memories of a fresh killing. The story begins with a twist and keeps you on your toes the whole time. Seanna is not your average girl. She was created by Samuel whom she killed by sucking out his soul and then gained the souls of everyone he in turn killed. The question is, did she kill in self defense and will she kill again? Unfortunately, her body is starting to crave souls with greater intensity. Her guilt about the metamorphosis she is going through and killing her “maker” create conflicting emotions. She is not sure whether she loved Samuel in the true sense of the word and her fears drive her on a journey to find out more about her own creation and Samuel’s past. Her Dark Migration is fascinating and Sandra R. Campbell, the author, leads the reader into this adventure with ease. Campbell forms visuals with words effortlessly and weaves a storyline that is scary. She creates a tension with her unique characters that immediately captures interest. The plot is a dark fantasy lover’s dream come true. The humour, budding sexual awareness, experimentation, and growth that Seanna experiences engages the reader more and more throughout the novel. The introduction of secondary characters is seamless. Seanna’s struggles take her to South Africa where she uncovers more of Samuel’s history. It is dark and, as she meets more of his creations, she realizes there are no easy answers to her confusing emotions. Not just emotions, but something is changing deep inside her through this journey. Not only does she discover that Samuel has made more than one creation, but meeting them and trying to survive leave her with a terrifying choice. As Seanna continues her migration into darkness, she struggles with her humanity and realizes that there are people she cares deeply about. Will she retain that humanity or will her natural instincts turn her? You will have to read this treat to find out. This is an author that needs to hit the reading radar in a big way. Dark Migration is a fabulous novel and I am anxiously awaiting the sequel to find out what happens next!" TBR - TopBookReviewers

Review by: DRomanceWriter Sandra R. Campbell’s dark, urban, fantasy novel, Dark Migration, is the second book in the Butterfly Harvest series. The story revolves around Seanna Raines a young woman who has become something of an enigma. Throughout the story, she struggles to come to terms with her new abilities and manage her transformation. Traumatic memories haunt her, while she tries to reconcile killing Samuel, her love, and creator, from book one. Needing answers to help put the pieces of her life together, she travels to South Africa, Samuel’s former home. There she meets a host of characters from a horrific zombie, a mysterious vampire, to a hysterical, man named, Kendrick. It took me a while to get into Dark Harvest because starting book two before reading book one confused me. I’m not sure if this book is meant to be read alone; however, I would strongly suggest starting with the first one. The reader will be able to figure out what is going on, but the story will best be appreciated from its true beginning. As a main character, I found Seanna to be a strong female protagonist. I liked her, but I liked Kendrick more. I enjoyed Kendrick, Seanna’s witty, loyal friend she meets on her way to South Africa. He was a breath of fresh air — a likeable, sweet, funny, and honest guy. Samuel, Seanna’s love interest, confused me. Like Seanna, I didn’t always know how I should feel about him and perhaps, that was by design. Val, the vampire, a new acquaintance of Seanna, also kept me wondering if I should trust him. One moment, he seemed to have real feelings for Seanna, the next second, I thought he might kill her, which is why I enjoyed the consistency and light-heartedness of Kendrick. Once I became familiar with the characters and understood the premise, the book moved very rapidly, keeping me wondering and turning pages. It’s a unique story I really enjoyed and highly recommend to lovers of horror and dark fantasy.

'Dark Migration' is the second book in the Butterfly Harvest series that continues to follow leading lady Seanna Raines. Seanna is still trying to adjust to life after killing Samuel - the 'man' she both fears and loves. She's trying to figure out who she is and what exactly she will become. As Seanna attempts to come to terms with her transformation, she decides to travel to Samuel's homeland in South Africa to seek answers. While there, she meets several of his "failed experiments" who all claim to know the truth. What they show Seanna may very well lead to her losing her grip on humanity and not accepting her fate. Should she choose life as an immortal and be with the one she loves or should she sacrifice everything to save a world that doesn't deserve to be saved? This book was truly intriguing and had me captivated from the very first paragraph. The plot behind the story was incredibly unique and I loved getting to know as much as I could about the characters, their histories and back stories, and the strange places and happenings surrounding them. The author wrote with such great descriptions and vivid details that I could easily imagine myself right beside Seanna throughout the book. Seanna was a great main character. She's very realistic - confused, insecure, lost, heartbroken and torn between two choices that have the power to change everything. On top of these things, she also struggles to understand her transformation and the various powers she possesses. I easily identified and empathized with her early on in the book and rooted for her until the end. The plot was really fresh and fascinating. The book has a fast pace and a natural flow that had me immersed in the story almost immediately. I'm eager to see what will happen in the next book and definitely recommend this series to fans of horror and dark fantasy fiction. Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Admittedly I am not the biggest reader of horror or thriller titles, but in this case I am glad I decide to take a leap and try something new. Dark Migration is the second in a series that revolves around Seanna Raines. This is important because when I started reading this book, I was lost so I did a little digging. I had no idea there was a first book and had to restart my adventure into this world. After being caught up everything was back on track and I was truly grateful for this second book. I thought we had a lot of questions unanswered leaving Butterfly Harvest and this one picked up nicely. Seanna herself is an interesting character. She is this mix of strong and vulnerable that really makes her an approachable character. She has survived through so much already both paranormal and just plain human and in this one she seems to get some answers that start to lead her down a path instead of just throwing her this way and that. Add her internal struggle to understand what she is and if she is something that goes bump in the night or not and you have this great story that really revolves about losing humanity and finding out secrets. Personally, that's a great story to me and what a paranormal-ridden story should have. On the flip side to that is the fact that this book had so many twists and turns you never knew what was going to happen next. NOT A BAD THING!! This is by definition a genre that should surprise you, you should never know what is going to happen next. Dark Migration has characters like Bianca and Kendrick that you aren't sure if they are coming or going and why they are really there to begin with, and others like Samuel and Val who you have so many questions about you can't tell if they are good or bad for Seanna. If all these questions and mystery aren't a mark of a great book, I clearly don't know what makes one. I'd also be amiss if I didn't mention that the growth from the first book to this one is recognizable. This one is much clearer about what is going on and you can see the development from one to the other as well. This was really a great read and I encourage you to pick it up
