Homicide detective Samantha Brown is a tough, highly decorated cop. But for the past twelve lonely years, since she nearly died of a gunshot wound, she has felt a deep inner longing.

The mysterious Lucan, with his timeless ability to seduce women, is focusing on the emotionally battered Samantha, who has awakened his wild memories of a long-ago love.

As Samantha pursues a deranged killer, her only clue is a medieval cross inscribed “Lucan”—the name of a man who owns a nightclub near the murder scene. Drawn into a seamy underworld, Samantha falls for Lucan, who believes that he’s a vampire and that Samantha is his reincarnated first love. Now she must save this man who seems beyond redemption—and who fulfills her deepest, darkest desires....

Samantha showed him the victim’s photo. “Do you recognize this woman?”
Lucan studied the image. “Yes, but I don’t know her name.”
 “How do you know her?”
“I had sex with her several weeks ago.” He sat back on the edge of his desk.
 “You were lovers?”
 He smiled. “We were strangers.”
“Do you often have one-night stands with strange, nameless women, Mr. Lucan?”
“Three nights.” He drained his wine glass and straightened, moving a step forward.
 “What was that?” Samantha asked.
“It was a three-night stand. I kept her in my bed for three nights.” He bent closer, and his voice dropped to a bedroom murmur. “How many nights would you last, Detective?”
Was he hitting on her? “None.” Sam felt strange, rooted to the floor. “I don’t have sex with strangers.”
“Then let’s get better acquainted, shall we?”

So yeah, I've been buying (and reading) the first three books. I bought the first thinking that it was going to be a good book (I decided it was ok, not the best, but it was readable) I bought the second because I was hoping that it would be much better (it wasn't in my opinion.) I guess you could say I got this one because I've been sucked into the world of the Darkyn and wanted to read more. Don't get me wrong, the stories aren't horrible beyond belief. I just find that the romance is very poorly developed. I'd like a better love story with the same kind of danger that's been in the previous stories. I won't be buying the author's stories again. I'm going to save my money and just get them at the library.

I didn't realize this was book 3 till it was too late. The book was alright, I really liked the story between Lucan and Samantha, but the rest of the story was hard to get into....now I know why because there were two books before it. The writing style was alright, the romance was not engaging. I would of liked to seen more story told of romance between Samantha and Lucan, I felt it lacked. Not sure if I will try any more in the series.

Definitely not the best in the series. Lucan, the main character, was characterized as the "eeeeeevil" assasin in the first few books, and now he's running a Goth nightclub? And falls madly in love with a cop? I spent most of the book wanting to slap some sense into the characters, alternating between Lucan, Sam, and Sam's weirdo Goth neighbor.

Review for "Dark Need" by Lynn ViehlLucan has killed for the Darkyn King for hundreds of years. Feared by his own people and hunted by the corrupt brethren, Lucan now has bigger problems. Samantha is a tough cop looking for a seriel killer, someone close to Lucan. To survive they will have to trust each other. Niether is very good at that. Previous characters in the series show up in this book. Alexandra and Micheal fight their way through most of the book, they have issues. It is really cute. I love the complexities of the series. There is a lot of action, great love scenes and plenty of mystery.

Finally finished this. It just didn't capture my interest as much as the first two. Part of my problem was the bad guy was the main character. Ah well, on to the next.

While this story of the romance between Samantha Brown and Lucan is interesting I found Lucan quite irritating and couldn't really understand why such a strong person like Samantha would find Lucan so attractive and not want to slap him more. He's a suspect, he can control her mind and she's not quite as strong as she should be.This series is straying a little to close to Christine Feehan's series, and I'm starting to get more than a little impatient with the characters and the idea the some of these people would have survived centuries without someone killing them due to irritation or them making themselves be too obvious in the world.

I finished this book feeling a little let down. The ending felt off -- like a rushed wrap up -- and the scenes/perspectives didn't, in my opinion, capture the full potential of the moment.

Love all the characters, especially Alex and now there's Samantha. These women are just as ruthless verbally, as the men they are mated to. They definitely add flavor to a story. I hope they pop up regularly throughout this series. Great writing skills!
