Tender Mercies and (of course) Comfort Food compete for my #1 fave, but honestly, this is a pretty close race. Also, I might be reading into it too much, but there’s a few interesting questions of political philosophy in the background, for those of us nerds who enjoy giant social questions mixed in with our erotic reads. ;)

I wish nook would list number of pages - very frustrating. This book is 144 incl. Dedications, etc. The situation in the book is odd- days and nights last 1000 hours each, and this contrivance is used as the main force in the story. Unfortunately, as with most of Thomas' books, the heroine is weak and self absorbed, which really detracts. The story could have been a lot better with more world building and details; for example, her parents demise ostensibly contributes a lot to Helen's malaise, but we never find out details, whether she is to blame as she claimed. We don't even know Helene's age really, or what she looks like. Her sister is used as a crutch conveniently, and except for the h/H, all others characters are flat, (and even the mains aren't really robust).

Helene lives in a dystopian world where night lasts for 1000 hours and monsters rule the night. Helene wants to die, the only reason she hasn't killed herself is because of her younger sister Simone. One night Helene is gets kidnapped by and meets Gabriel. Gabriel, Helene will soon find out is the ruler of the world she lives in. Helene hopes that Gabriel will end her existence. Gabriel has other plans for Helene. Throughout the book I wondered what was Gabriel's motivation in wanting to restore Helene's desire to live. When his motivation was finally revealed my mind much like Helene's was blown. There are not enough words to describe how great this book was. I loved the ending which I won't spoil for you by hinting at it. Once again Kitty Thomas did not fail to mesmerize me with her story telling.
