Dark Prince is the first book in Eve Silver's Dark Gothic series that I have read, but because each story is a stand-alone with recurrent themes, the books can be approached in any order. As the title suggests, the mood of the story is 'dark' and foreboding and Eve Silver builds this atmosphere throughout the novel. We encounter murder, mystery, and deception, all through the eyes of our innocent heroine, Jane. Jane is taken by the brooding Aidan Warrick as payment of her father's debt and though she presumes her new role to be that of a servant, the pair quickly fall into an easy routine, becoming 'friends'. Dark Prince is a historical novel and I enjoyed the way in which Eve Silver's tone is consistent and the events are perfectly aligned with the period in which the story is set. Aidan Warrick is by no means a perfect hero and if Dark Prince was moved to a contemporary setting, he would be a tatted-up bad boy! Yet, Eve Silver allows us to see past his need for vengeance in the way he protects and cares for Jane. This is really a story in which roles are questioned; those who should be trusted, like Jane's father, become the villains and the murderous Aidan is the hero. Crippled, naive Jane, who at that point in history would have been shunned, becomes the shining star! Despite its unsavory themes, Dark Prince is essentially a romance and I loved the way Eve Silver chooses to evolve this. We witness Aidan and Jane becoming necessary to each other and it is within this safety that Jane reaches her sexual maturity. These scenes are not gratuitous, but still intensely erotic because of the passion and emotion shared between the two characters. After reading Dark Prince, I am now hoping to read more of this series and would recommend it to all readers. I received this as a complimentary review copy, but my opinion has not been influenced in any way.

I loved this book. Easy to read in a day but not one of those books where you know what will happen at every turn. Refreshing to see not only flaws in the male but imperfections in the female lead as well. Highly recommend.

This is a true gothic but better than most of the ones I read in the late 60s. Jane Heatherington is a lame daughter of an innkeeper who has lost all their money. She meets a handsome man, Aiden Warrick, who treats her like a lady. Unfortunately, he is the man who is owed the most money and wants to destroy her Father for what was done to Aiden many years ago. She feels she has no choice but to become his indentured servant to seven years. Who can she trust and who can she believe? Aiden is cruel and abrupt to her part of the time and gentle and giving the rest of the time. She loves her Father but he is secretive and his past is hidden. All in all I loved this book. The right amount of mystery and romance.
