Dark Secret (Dark Series #15) by Christine Feehan

Meet a savage hunter from the darkest jungles and the beautiful prey he’ll never let escape in this sensual Carpathian novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.

Rafael De La Cruz has spent centuries hunting vampires with his brothers, and with each passing year his capacity to feel emotions has grown weaker and weaker until finally there’s barely even a memory left—until only sheer willpower keeps him from turning into the very abomination he hunts. But it’ll take more than will to keep him away from the woman who is meant to be his and his alone...
For five years, rancher Colby Jansen has been the sole protector of her younger half-siblings, and with fierce determination and work she has kept her family together and the ranch operational. Now, the De La Cruz brothers are threatening that stability. They claim that her siblings belong with their father’s family, not with her. Colby vows to fight them—especially the cold and arrogant Rafael De La Cruz. But Rafael is after more than her family—he wants Colby, and will not let anything stand between them. After ages of loneliness, the raw desire to possess her overwhelms his very soul, driving him to claim her as his lifemate.

Rafael De La Cruz is introduced as a savage Carpathian male wanting nothing more but to strap his lifemate to his side and bend his will on her. Colby is a strong minded woman and she is the first to be introduced as a Dragonseeker. Bearing the mark of her rare race, she meets this savage male and all hell breaks loose. She is thrusted into his world so quickly as not only humans try to break apart her world, but also vampires as they learn of her bloodline and powers. Colby tries hard to shield her siblings from the chaos and other worldly beings that are coming into their lives, but it seems like they cannot be saved so easily. Rafael will protect his lifemate and her siblings with everything he has and his brothers are willing to help as well. I love this book. Rafael is the most demanding and ruthless of all the De La Cruz brothers, maybe not more than Manolito, but that's for another story. Rafael is sexy and demanding, thinking his will is law and law is unto himself. Colby will show him what a female with her own mind will give a Carpathian male who believes his word is law.

This was hard for me to rate. In general, I'm a fan of the Carpathian novels, but this is the first one I'm reviewing. In a series of events almost typical to the Carpathian world, a human woman with psychic abilities turns out to be the lifemate of an ancient warrior. This Carpathian, Rafael, sees color for the first time in centuries and strives to secure his lifemate to him for eternity. The domineering attitude doesn't fly with Colby, the woman of interest, especially when she sees him as a threat to everything she worked for. In a series that has threatened to become quite stale, Feehan punched this novel up with interesting plot twists, such as the De La Cruz brothers' permanent posting in Brazil, Colby's family and ranch situation, and an ultra-dangerous vampire. What kept me from allowing more than three stars were two major issues. The first was writing technique. I found the constant and sudden point of view changes and certain elements of her writing technique distracting, and, at times, confusing. My other issue was Rafael. As a Carpathian, I expected him to be domineering and somewhat disdainful of women's capabilities. However, I was constantly disturbed by his rough treatment of Colby, both physically and emotionally. Yes, these heroes tend to be rough, but in this situation, Colby was frightened of him, felt raped/intruded upon at some point(s), and Rafael treated it as her problem until the very end. I was NOT satisfied when she suddenly 'realized' that all her emotional distress was because she was fighting the fact she really loved him the whole time, and that he realized how awful he treated and disrespected her only at the very end. Despite her great strength of character, she was very manipulated by him. He was a constant danger to everyone around, including Colby. Rafael's character was overdone. The tender moments that gave me hope he was changing throughout the book were jarred by very selfish actions in the name of 'love.' So he was close to turning vampire. That is the only possible excuse, but I've read other Carpathians close to turning who, while domineering, treated their lifemates much better without giving them the feeling, ever, of being raped. The only reason I gave this a 3-star rating instead of a 2-star rating is because Feehan provided a rich, detailed setting with moving subplots (the younger half-siblings, mysterious happenings on the the ranch, an impossible mortgage to meet). I was very disturbed by sections of this novel. But the entirety of the story drew me in so much I ended up finishing it in a very short period of time. -C.W.

A side from Dark Prince, this is one of my favorites of the series. If you are looking for a novel with a sexy, witty, romantic, prower ego males and all-around fun story this is it.

This book is no.13 in the Dark Series and the introduction to the Dragon Seeker lineage. This book introduced the De La Cruz brothers. I enjoyed this story because even though its a part of the Carpathtian series, it branches off to a different family tree. The story is a lot more serious in contrast to some of the others in the series but as usual with Christine Feehans books you will be hooked in the first chapter. I love this series and I loved this book. Romantic and thrilling until the very end.

repetive, use a glossary for explinations of Carpathian background Reading it over and over in each book gets tiresome.

The Dark Series books by Christine Feehan are really good. The sex scenes are a bit much and sometimes go on and on and on... But, other than that, the story-line is awesome!

Christine does it again with another hit! I love how prior characters are brought back into the story line. As an owner of each of the Dark Series books, I love to be able to catch up with them. This Author always impresses me with each story and the characters she creates. She has a great writing style. I captivated by every book she writes from the first page to the last. Christine Feehan weaves her spellbinding magic into a plot that has it all, action, romance, sensuality and intrigue sporting a story line that is unique and different from the rest. A fast paced adventure that never gets boring

True to the series, Dark Secret delivers a romantic and exciting escape for romance novel readers. Definitely worth picking up as are the rest of the books in the series. This was one of my favorites of all the books. Loved the characters and storyline.

This was my second book in the series after dark demon. I thought dark demon was great but this was wow!!! However, the reason it got a 3 star and not 5 is because Feehan has shown the heroine to be so strong willed at the beginning but like all Feehans heroines Colby turns out weak. Although Colby did put up a longer fight than the others. The same over used repetitive words are used such as 'heart slammed' etc. Okay so the hero is an alpha male n yes he is spoilt and loves to get his own way but we wouldnt have it any other way now would we? Especially since hes had the same manner for over 1700 years.

This was my first Feehan book to read. I love romance novels, but have never read her writing or any writings with vampires. I was hooked on this book from the very beginning and it took me only a day to finish it. I can't wait to read her other books!!!!!!!!

I have every book that Christine Feehan wrote and yet this book seemed like a joke. It was as if she were forced to write it and didn't take the time to sit down and think things over before putting them to paper. i could hardly read the book and found it horid the the very end.

Little does Colby Jansen realize that as she has fought to keep her family together for the last few years, she's been warring with what the ignorant might call vampires. However, the De La Cruz family are not vampires, at least not yet, though every day brings Rafael and his twin closer to that doom. When Rafael meets Colby his world turns right side up, changing everything about their conflict. His soul knows her as his lifemate, the woman who can save a Carpathian male from becoming a vampire. Yet, the vampires want him on their side, and are willing to destroy innocents to win him over to darkness. Colby's reluctance to accpet her destiny only makes things worse. When she does accept it and joins herself to Rafael, the power of love is unleashed. ............................................ **** The Carpathian world is becoming ever wider. One expects vampires in gothic settings, even in the modern world. Finding them to be cowboys is a definite novelty, one that breaks stereotypes in a welcome way. ****

I have read all of Christine Feehan's books and was very let down by this one. The heroine Colby was repeatedly compelled to engage in sexual relations with Rafael to the point where I was very offended. The author has gone too far with the male Carpathians 'taking' their lifemates. I intend to write to the publisher. Rafael was not an attractive love interest, just an animal following his hormones and forcing a woman into doing things she didn't want to do. This is not the kind of book I could ever recommend to a woman to read. The mystery twist at the end was interesting, but not worth the violence in this book.

Although I did enjoy this book, this one is my least favorite of the Carpathian novels. The story lacks the spiritualilty and mystique of her other novels. The characters weren't as well developed as I would have liked. But it is still worth the read.
