Danger once again laps at the shores of Barkley Sound, the Graveyard of the Pacific….

It may be summer, but schoolteacher Anna Silver’s trip to the coastal town of Bamfield is anything but a vacation. She’s on the run, desperate to stay one step ahead of her father’s murderer and determined to track down the one man she’s been told to trust: her father’s old cell mate, Brent Carver. But when she finds him, she discovers not a kind, elderly artist but a dangerously hot alpha male with blood on his hands.

Loyal to the core, Brent would never turn away his friend’s daughter when she comes seeking help. He can’t deny Anna his protection…just as he can’t deny the instantaneous attraction he struggles to keep in check. But as their passion blazes out of control, a sadistic killer is on the hunt to stop Anna from uncovering his dark secrets.

Toni Anderson is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite romantic suspense authors! Murder, mystery, suspense, multiple conspiracies, and one sinfully, sexy romance, Dark Waters has it all as danger once again laps at the shores of Barkley Sound, the Graveyard of the Pacific…. Schoolteacher Anna Silver doesn’t give her trust easily. But when her estranged father uncovers a money laundering scheme and winds up dead, she finds herself on the run, desperate to stay one step ahead of his murderer. His last message to her is as clear as it is insistent: she’s in danger and Brent Carver, the man with whom he shared a prison cell for five years, is the only person she should turn to for help. With nowhere else to go and a killer on her trail, Anna flees to the coastal town of Bamfield in search of her father’s ex-cellmate and what she hopes is safety. But when she finds Brent, she discovers he’s not the kind, elderly artist she had pictured but a dangerously hot alpha male with blood on his hands. Tucked into the west coast of Vancouver Island, Brent’s isolated home hasn’t seen many visitors. And his friend’s daughter is the last person he ever expected to grace his doorstep. But loyal to the core, he would never turn Anna away when she comes seeking his help. She’s in trouble, and he can’t deny her his protection … just as he can’t deny the attraction he struggles to keep in check. But as their passion blazes out of control, the perfect storm brews off the coast of his island home, bringing with it a sadistic killer hunting Anna and the secrets she’s come close to uncovering. A truly gifted storyteller, Anderson writes in a thrilling, detailed, gritty style that always leaves me wanting more. Dark Waters is fraught with danger and intrigue, resulting in a suspenseful, action-packed story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Once again, I was somewhat surprised by the number of negative reviews about this book. Specifically, that the author had inserted "romance" into a thriller. I'm not sure what others expect when they read a book clearly categorized as romantic suspense, but I, for one, expect ... well, romance. And though there was plenty of sexual tension between Anna and Brent, I felt the emphasis of the story leaned more towards the mystery and suspense than on the actual romance. Another well-written story with a diabolical plot, a bit of steamy romance, and an interesting mix of captivating characters, Dark Waters is a well-crafted murder mystery full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.

This story sort of had the best-friend’s-little-sister feel to it. You see, Anna’s father was Brent’s cellmate. Anna sent her father a lot of letters throughout the years that he was incarcerated and those letters were a lifeline for not only her father but for Brent as well. The two of them watched Anna grow through her teenage years and Brent kind of lived vicariously through her letters since he’d been locked up since he was in his teens. So when he meets her, he feels like he already knows her due to all the letters that his cellmate read to him. Heck, he fell in love with her through her letters as she grew up. So, it stands without reason that when she shows up at his door in trouble, he jumps right up and helps her. This was the first time reading this author’s work and I really enjoyed it. She sets the stage nicely for this romantic suspense. We not only get the POV of the main characters but of the villains as well. We follow them while they do some horrible things while trying to track down Anna. I think being able to get into their head helped keep the fact that there were some really sick and twisted people chasing after Anna. I also liked that there was the added bonus of suspense when it came to Brent. Because he’s an ex-con who will be on parole for the rest of his life, his involvement with Anna, the weapons he possesses and trying to keep Anna safe while finding out where the money was sent really puts him in a tight spot. Since pretty much everything he does when it comes to keeping Anna safe, violates his probation and will ultimately send him back to prison. Even though there is nothing that says that this book is part of a series, it is. I’m not sure what number it is in the series but I definitely got the sense a few times during the story that this was part of a series. I’m not saying that this story can’t be read as a stand-alone because that’s precisely what I did but I think I would have had more connections with some of the secondary characters and quite possibly the main characters had I read the previous books. This was definitely a great story that mixed a lot of elements into it. We had suspense, romance, redemption and salvation. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Reviewed by Gemini for Read Your Writes Book Reviews This was by far the most action packed book that I have read to-date. The storytelling moved along like a big-budget movie. There was murder, mystery, deceit, and...sex. I could visualize everything that happened in this book just as if it were playing on my big screen TV. To say that I was more than impressed would be an understatement. Dark Waters is the story of Anna Silver and her unexpected search to find out the truth behind the so-called accidental death of her father, Davis Silver and his supposed theft of $60 million. There is an extensive cast of characters that include several former military guys, an ex-con, and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Everything about this book keeps you on your toes until the final chapter. To make things even more like a script from Hollywood, the ex-con plays the hero. In short, Davis Silver discovers a money laundering scheme that gets him killed. His daughter enlists the help of Davis’ former cellmate, Brent Carver. Brent spent time in prison for murdering his father. I could give you more details but...you will just have to read the book to figure out the rest. I will say that there is enough baggage surrounding the main characters that it could fill an airport terminal. Either way, hands down the best book that I have read this year. Source: Blog Tour Host

Anna has a safe, somewhat comfortable life as a school teacher. Some days though she feels like she's just going through the motions with her nice little house, trying to date and be 'normal'. Anna's father Davis, now out of prison and working as an accountant, has discovered a lot of money being moved through and out of the company he's working for. The biggest problem is that whoever is doing it is using his passwords and his name. On the surface it looks like he's been the one taking the money. Anna's life is soon turned upside down when she finds out her father, an ex convict, has died and she's received a voice message from him shortly before his death warning her of danger...and telling her to go to the only other person he trusts. Brent Carver, now on parole, was her father's friend and cell mate in prison. When he finds Anna on his doorstep in the middle of the night, they are both scared. Neither of them knows what to think or who to trust. Brent knew Davis very well though. He believes he was innocent the first time, and he believes he is innocent this time too, no matter how things look initially. Anna has a harder time believing in her father's innocence. She is convinced he was guilty the first time, so in her mind it's very possible he's not innocent this time either. Together, as danger gets closer and closer, they embark on a journey to discover the truth about the money and Davis' death. Davis hid the money and sent Anna documents before his death, but they can find neither. The people who want this information and the money will stop at nothing to get it, even if it means killing anyone in their way. Soon Davis and Anna must ask for help, Davis does not want to end up in prison again and neither of them want to end up dead. He seeks help from his brother Finn (ex-military) and Finn's fiancée, who just happens to be an RCMP officer, but they still run, not quite trusting anyone but each other. As they search for the truth and the money, taking us on an adventure from Vancouver Island to Chicago, Anna and Brent are also drawn closer and closer to each other. Between the action and the terror, they are fighting an unexpected attraction to each other. Both of them have a past they are hiding from that have prevented them from getting close to anyone else, and make them fight their feelings towards each other. But as the chase gets closer, so does the attraction, and soon they can no longer fight it. Can they trust each other enough? Will they have anything left for each other when and if this is all over? Anna was at times hard to understand. When her father went to prison her life fell apart in more ways than one, and as much as she's tried, she's never quite recovered from it or moved on. I'd have liked a bit more background on her family before her father's conviction, because it sounded like they had a happy, loving family and I couldn't understand why Anna didn't believe her father's proclamations of innocence at all. She maintained as much of a relationship with him as she could, but she always believed he was guilty. That was the only area of Dark Waters I'd have liked a bit more of. Brent is an ex-con who just wants to be left alone. He's big, scary, and oh, hot! Anna does see the good in him though, and she is not scared of him. She sees past the walls he's build and even manages to get over them! Brent has hidden parts of him too, if only he can trust Anna with them. If they can survive, I think they'll be a great couple together. They're not quite as different as they think. There are a lot of other people involved in Dark Waters, from the dangerous ex-mercenaries to Brent's brother and Anna's mother that kept the pages flowing, adding unexpected twists to Dark Waters. Toni awed me with Dark Waters! Dark Waters is an intense, high energy romantic thriller. Toni had me at times wanting to turn the page, and at times scared to turn the page!Watching Anna and Brent's characters develop and evolve was fascinating! People are seldom what you expect them to be at first impression, and these two proved no different. The way they were and the stories behind them that came out as Dark Waters progressed really made me come to love them both. I admit part of why I love this book is the setting! I am an island girl, and Toni's descriptions of the east coast (and other parts) of Vancouver Island were perfect and how I know it to be. She will take you there and you will hear those waves pounding and smell the salt water. The journey to the conclusion of Dark Waters was intriguing both romantic and full of action. Toni will take you where you never expected to go, leaving you with a mix of emotions. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who loves romance with a lot of suspense and action, you won't be disappointed!

The last thing Anna Silver expected was a panicked telephone message from her ex-convict father, stating something about having taken money....again.....and running for his life. He also says she is not safe and has to look up his ex-cellmate, Brent Carver, the only other person he trusts in this world. She gets the message just as the police, who have come to notify her of her father's deadly 'accident', leave. Scared witless and not particularly trusting of anyone, including her mother and stepfather, Anna immediately grabs the bare essentials and takes off for Vancouver Island, where she hopes to find the man who became her father's best friend in jail. When an unexpected visitor surprises Brent Carver in the middle of the night, the last person he expected to see was the daughter of the man who had become like a father to him over the years. He is shocked to find out his friend is dead and although he avoids social interaction at all cost, he can tell Anna is in trouble and he owes it to her father to help and protect her at all cost. He calls in the help of the few contacts he has, to try and find out what is going on. It becomes clear that someone is after money that they think her father left Anna information to, and are killing people to get to her. When Brent's house is no longer safe, and they are forced to find safety elsewhere in close quarters, a slow smouldering attraction sparks into a full fire between them. But the past for both Anna and Brent holds a lot of dark shadows and when a desperate call from a family member comes in, Anna has no choice but to leave Brent and run to their side. ¿Brent struggles to stay on the legal side of the law, to avoid ending up back in jail, however righteous he might be. But when Anna's life is in danger, he ignores every warning and all sense of self-preservation and does all he needs to do to save the woman he has come to love. ****** Loved it. Absolutely, unequivocally loved it!!! Superb blend of suspense and romance with just the right touch of heat! This was my first book by Toni Anderson, and I cannot believe I haven't read any of her work before. It is right up my alley and I guarantee you, this will NOT be the last book I read by her!  Her characters are nicely fleshed out, with enough history to give us a good idea of what makes them tick, but without going into endless recounts of historic facts no longer pertinent to the current storyline. She gives us sufficient insight in the workings of each of their individual minds, but avoids the entire book becoming inner dialogue, which can become very tiring. The balance is captured very well. Ms. Anderson can spin a very good suspense, all ends neatly tied and well thought out. It felt like the plot was properly planned and schemed. Very clever. Also quite the ability to write a steamy sex scene, without being crassly explicit, it is sufficiently descriptive, obviously not shy and Ms. Anderson doesn't feel the need to hide behind endless floral descriptions, for which I am personally extremely grateful!!! Tell it like it is!!! I read the book cover to cover and I seriously wish I had all of her books now..... I highly recommend DARK WATERS and will post 5 stars with complete conviction!! **ARC courtesy of NetGalley and Montlake Romance in return for an honest review.**
