Jesse returns to New Orleans post-Katrina to hunt the vampires that killed her sister and left her infected with a demon that drives her to crave blood. Jesse is woefully unprepared to fight the vampires but luckily runs into a real vampire hunter, Maddox, who recognizes her unusual stare as a human infected but not turned into a vampire. Together they and other hunters try to staunch the ever increasing number of vampires that may be signalling the End of Days.I enjoyed this book a great deal. I like the vampire lore that Quinn as developed. I also like that the vampires are pure evil. Not that I don't enjoy a friendly vamp now and then, but it is nice for them to be a clear enemy for a change. I like that the characters are flawed. Jesse is brash and makes bad decisions (understatement). Maddox has his own ghosts to deal with. There is lots of action with this motley crew of slayers. Looking forward to the next installment.

This book left me scratching my head in wonder....wondering how it ever got published, that is!! I wanted so much to like this book, but I actually had to force myself to finish it. Not only is it poorly written, but poorly edited. At one point, the protagonist says how she never went to his sisters grave, but then later in the book it she says how she'd only been to her sister's grave once. HUH? How did not only the author, but an editor not catch this? Also, it felt several times like the author just cut and pasted the same passages throughout the book, not just repeating the information, but repeating the information word for word. This book left me wanting only one thing...MY MONEY BACK!!!

Darkness Descending represents a return of Author Devyn Quinn's writing to it's roots in the dark paranormal romance/urban fantasy genre. Using exceptional graphic imagery and lush prose Ms. Quinn builds a foreboding, dangerous world set in post Katrina New Orleans where a secret war is waged against an insidious and powerful legion of demon-vampires called the Telave. It is here readers meet the novel's unlikely, reluctant heroine Jesse Burke, who through an unfortunate mistake actually hosts one of the demons inside her body. No human female has ever survived the infection once bitten. They all die or are reborn as one of the creatures. As the novel opens, we find an ill prepared Jesse girding herself to witness the graveyard birth of a vampire which she plans to kill. After a year of fighting the thing inside her, refusing to feed it's blood-lust so it can take over her body and soul Jesse is set on a mission of vengeance to destroy as many of the creatures as she can. She also wants to find out what happened to her twin sister Amanda who was taken at the same time as Jesse. As it turns out, a newly 'birthed' vampire isn't as easily destroyed as Jesse thought and in a tense action scene where she is very nearly killed a savior intervenes. Jesse's rescuer goes by the name of Maddox de Valois, the novel's tortured, war weary hero. Maddox (I love his name), along with a surly native American / Russian brute named Reyen, and the diminutive, brilliant Asian Dr. Sam Chen, make up a rag tag team of vampire demon slayers called Palindromes. Shrouded in secrecy and a creation rooted in mythology, Palindromes are all males who carry a unique DNA structure that is able to destroy the demon infection and actually transforms their bodies, giving them superhuman abilities enabling them to fight the vampires. Maddox is centuries old, has suffered immeasurable losses, and witnessed much death and destruction over the duration of his long life. He knows he should destroy Jesse, however the fact that she has been able to survive when no other human has and shows a tenacious will to live and suppress the thing inside her impresses him. And, there is the prophesy, which you will have to read the novel to learn about. The sexual attraction and tension certainly zings between Jesse and Maddox, but theirs is a difficult romance hampered by trust issues, and the very nature of who they are. Jesse, after all is host to a demon Maddox has devoted his life to slaying. There is tenderness and sensuality in this story, but their relationship is thwart by the ever looming danger of the demons that are growing in strength and numbers. This was another read I had difficulty putting down. Ms. Quinn skillfully crafted each scene that advances a fast paced plot with plenty of twists, intrigue and a forbidden romance. This author is known for developing extremely nasty antagonists and the one in this story is no exception, the ages old, powerful, seeming indestructible Queen of the Telave. Amonate's frightening plans for humanity seems to be coming to fruition. When all appears lost, Ms. Quinn designs an action packed, surprising conclusion that will tug at your heartstrings, and sets the stage for Book II in what is to be a series of stories. IMHO Ms. Quinn has developed an exciting and enticing world for the first of her Vampire Armageddon books, that has all the ingredients lovers of dark paranormal worlds look for.

Jesse Burke dreams of avenging what a vampiric Fallen Angel did to her last year by becoming a slayer. She has kept her infection somewhat under control but knows time is running out for her as those abominations she wants dead want Armageddon now by infecting humans with demonic parasites. Her first attempt in the Metairie cemetery almost costs her life as she learns none of these monsters is easy to kill; Maddox deValois the demon interceded and saved her life. He invites the tyro lone wolf to join his slayer team keeping New Orleans somewhat cleansed of these predators; reluctantly she does. However, soon after joining his squad and still struggling to understand that "There is no 'I' in 'team', but there is in 'win'."(Michael Jordan), neither is prepared to find out that Jesse has a greater destiny than that of a slayer. The first Vampire Armageddon urban fantasy is an exhilarating action-packed thriller from the opening graveyard battle until the climatic finish. Overall the story line is fast-paced but somewhat slowed down by the background ancient religions thesis that enhances the dark world of Devyn Quinn. This is a terrific opening act. Harriet Klausner
