Platon lässt einen Erzähler berichten über ein Gespräch mehrerer historischer Personen. Der Anlass liegt bereits geraume Zeit zurück. Man hielt im Wettstreit Reden über die Erotik, um Gott Eros zu würdigen. Und jeder der Redner sieht die Dinge etwas anders. Platons Lehrer Sokrates berichtet über ein Eros-Verständnis, das er sich zu eigen machte nach Gesprächen mit Diotima, einer weisen Frau. Dieses Verständnis dürfte Platons eigener Sichtweise entsprechen, die seit der Rennaisance als platonische Liebe bekannt ist.
