Overview

The DASH Diet for Hypertension by Thomas Moore M.D., Mark Jenkins, Laura Svetkey, Njeri Karanja

From Dr. Thomas Moore and a team of top doctors and nutritionists from Harvard, Duke, and Johns Hopkins medical schools comes the guide to the DASH diet, which is scientifically proven to significantly reduce high blood pressure!

More than 50 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure, and most of them control it by taking prescription drugs with potentially dangerous side effects. But there is a natural, affordable, and easy-to-manage alternative to medication: the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. Developed by a world-class team of doctors and nutritionists, the DASH diet is clinically proven to lower blood-pressure levels and thereby reduce the risk of heart failure, stroke, and kidney disease. Now, with The DASH Diet for Hypertension, readers can benefit from:

• A hearty and healthful selection of DASH menus, recipes, even grocery lists
• DASH weight-loss and exercise programs for everyday living
• The science behind DASH, including calorie worksheets and a formula to calculate body-mass

...and much more from this revolutionary program, which is recommended by the American Heart Association; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; the American Society for Hypertension; and other leading medical authorities.

I bought this book after reading the NIH pamphlet on the DASH diet. My blood pressure is pre-hypertension and my mother is on medication for her blood pressure. The DASH diet is not just your typical low sodium diet. This diet also incorporates higher levels of other nutrients that help with blood pressure and vascular function. In addition to the reduced sodium this diet increases one's intake of fruit and vegetables that are high in fiber and potassium, both of which serve to fight hypertension. The book discusses the actual DASH study and the science behind it, but in layman's terms so the average individual such as myself can understand it. It also gives all of the recipes and meal plan used in the study as well. I would definitely recommend this book not just to those with high blood pressure but to anyone who would like a healthier nutrition lifestyle.

I bought this book when my doctor told me I had hypertension. My doctor gave me an article on The DASH Diet and told me to read it. I wanted to know more, so I did a search for this diet on the Internet. That's when I found this book. I learned a lot about how the body works and about hypertension in general. I got a lot of great ideas about what to eat. I have changed my eating patterns and what a difference it has made. I also walk and drink more water! After six weeks of changing my diet, I went back to my doctor weighing eleven pounds less and my blood pressure dropped to 130/80 from 160/94.I gave this book as a gift to someone because the information that I gleaned from it helped me to change my life and they needed help as well. And, it did not cost a whole lot, which was a plus!

The DASH Diet for Hypertension is based on research regarding the impact that nutrition and exercise has on reducing blood pressure. It has ideas for menus, exercise, and how to make "small" lifestyle changes toward better health without the use of drugs. It is not a "diet" but introduces lifestyle changes to increase health benefits. It's a "must read" and a "must do" for anyone with hypertension issues.

High blood pressure prompted this purchase. It is full of useful information and recipes, but after 2 weeks, it did not decrease the blood pressure. Perhaps, given more time, it may be the perfect solution, but it did not produce promised results in our case.
