Overview

Evan and Caris St. John own a beach house on isolated Daufuskie Island off the South Carolina coast. After a hurricane strikes the island, Caris and their three children, Katie, Abby, and Will, discover a mysterious treasure chest in its wake. Unbeknownst to them, the chest has been sealed for nearly a century and a half. A mysterious Gullah woman rumored to be a witch predicted decades earlier that the family would break the seal and awaken the magic inside. The unbelievable begins to happen.

Through a sudden turn of events, the St. Johns find themselves whisked away on a desperate quest through time and space to reunite their family. Along the way, they must survive a brutal plantation overseer, the Confederate Army fleeing Sherman’s March to the Sea, and one man lost in time who seeks to change his future and the course of history as we know it . . .

Everything now hinges on the actions they take in the present, as well as the actions they have already taken in the past, on Daufuskie Island.

My 13 year old daughter read this and loved it. When I was looking for a beach read, she suggested this book. I read the entire book in one weekend and also enjoyed it very much. There was just enough mystery to keep me hooked. The author did a wonderful job with his storytelling and I felt like I could picture each scene perfectly in my head. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a quick-moving story, or who loves a bit of history. This book is suitable for teens through adults and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

This light-hearted beach read is like no other and is well suited for almost any age. It is wrapped in magic and interwoven with nuggets of history, making it delightfully unexpected and educational. The plot follows a family's adventure after discovering a bit of magic. I tend to be attracted to books with magic in it, but admitted do not typically enjoy historical fiction. I find that it can be a bit dry and slow-paced at times. However, with Daufuskie Island, I found myself pulled deeper into the plot because of the historical twists. In addition to the unforeseen plot, I really enjoyed how the author (::spoiler alert::) plays with the timeline and crafts the characters' interactions when they cross through time. It creates a deeper layer not typically found in beach reads. In fact, the characters' interactions in and out of the traditional timeline are what made the plot gripping for me. In sum, if you're looking for a light summer read appropriate for anyone 13 years and older, I think this hits the spot. Daufuskie Island infuses magic into the story, adds a dollop of drama and action, and sprinkles on hope for good measure. It's sure to entertain and make you smile. At least it did with me :)

This is a real page-turner. A great, whimsical story plot for children or adults who enjoy an easy-reading experience and a fun story. There is a fun, historical component about a real place with a storied past. The characters are realistic, and the flow of the story makes you want to know what happens next. Definitely recommend.
