Overview

A mistaken identity. A gruesome murder. The uniting of two powerful clans.

Trained as a warrior…

Brighit of Clonascra is the only daughter of the fearsome overking, Sean, but despises the trappings and demands of womanhood. She's far more comfortable training for battle than preparing a meal. Long held alliances require she set aside selfish dreams and take Darragh as her husband. The union intended to promote peace between the clans is interrupted by the shocking murder of a neighboring king and she quickly discovers there are far worse things than being wed.

Trained to be king…

Darragh of Drogheda has no wish to follow in the path of his father, Tadhg, but he is an obedient son and supports his father's plans. His marriage to Brighit, however, will be no hardship at all since he finds her most intriguing especially when she fights him at every turn. A she-warrior indeed. Her persistent dismissal of him merely blows the fire aflame and sets him down the path to discovery of all her most tightly held secrets.

When she stands accused of the murder, can they finally come to an agreement that will give them each what they truly desire?

Daughter of the King is book #3 in "The Derbfine" series by Ashley York. This is Brighit and Darragh's story. While this is book #3, it can easily be read as a stand alone. Great characters, well defined storyline, with danger, intrigue, romance and love. The suspense and mystery added to this couple's struggles and challenges. As usual, Ms. York managed to capture my attention and keep me captivated to the end. Ms. York's knowledge of history and her writing style brings this story to life. If you enjoy Medieval Romance, capitvating storylines, engaging characters, mystery, danger, and intrigue, your absolutely adore, DAUGHTER OF THE KING. I enjoyed watching as Brighit and Darragh's story came to life. Their trust and love in each other and their love of clan brought this story to fruition for me. Wonderfully written! Another great read by Ashley York!

Darragh and Brighit have been betrothed since they were very young. The last thing Brighit wants is to be tied down to a man, especially one like Darragh. She craves her freedom and her nights out gallivanting with her brothers and their friends is more fun than fussing over clothes or swooning over men. She knows she must do her duty as her marriage is a uniting of two powerful clans. She finally relents but on the night before her wedding, she partakes in one last ride. The consequences for her actions tear her apart and her guilt wars with keeping her family safe. When she stands accused of murder, will she finally confess all or will she stay silent? I’ve a big fan of this series and have read the previous two. This one, though, speaks to the heart of what it means to be a woman in this era. Women married for strengthening of one’s clan while clearly knowing her place. Her husband she grows to love while taking care of the home and their children. A woman like Brighit doesn’t fit in and her willful disregard for her personal safety is the crux of this story. Daughter of the King is a sweeping historical romance with plenty of action and suspense propelling the plot forward. There were several surprises I didn’t see coming. While I love strong heroines, I found Brighit a tad annoying at times. She doesn’t do what she’s told, puts her life and her family’s lives in danger, doesn’t listen to her husband and is selfish. That being said, she grew immensely throughout the story which I appreciate. If you’re looking for a tempting historical romance with treachery, murder, suspense and heart-pounding romance, pick up Daughter of the King today. While it’s a standalone, I highly recommend reading the whole series. Simply delightful! My Rating: 5 stars

A fast paced adventure that captures the essence and traditions of ancient Ireland. I was grabbed by the Prologue and could not put it down until I turned the last page. York's well drawn characters easily come to life and the descriptions make you feel part of the story. This is the tale of two people who were betrothed as children in the hope to unite their clans. Brighit of Clan Cruadhlaoch grew up with a father and brothers who indulged her free spirit and taught how to fight, hunt and ride like a man. Her soon to be husband, Darragh of Clan MacNaughton has been trained to one day be king like his father although he has no ambition to take that place. As the time draws near and Brighit and Darragh are to be wed, Brighit worries that she will lose all of her freedom and be made to only act as a lady and no longer have her adventures. But as fate often steps in, an adventure goes wrong right before the wedding and she is forced to keep secrets from her husband. Mystery, murder and strong emotions abound that will have you holding your breath until the last page to find out what happens. This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone, although I do want to read the first two books. Ashley York is a new author to me and I am so glad to have found her and intend to read everything she has written!! Lori Dykes

Daughter of the king by Ashley York is Book Three in "The Derbfine series. This is the story of Brighit of Clan Cruadhlaoch and Darragh of Clan MacNaughton. I have read (and loved them) the previous books in this series but feel this can easily be a standalone book. Darragh and Brighit. have been betrothed since their birth. Although since they were not neighboring clans they didn't see each other much growing up. Brighit when she was younger and learned of the pending marriage was happy because Darragh was good looking and thought he might be there for her when other teased or picked on her but she soon learned he would keep his distance from her and they never really interacted. So in the present day when it is nearing time that they marry Brighit has not wish to do so and really doesn't get a long with him. Brighit had taken to being a Warrior and Darragh the times they did interact he was always trying to control her and her actions. Darragh is aware that Brighit perfers to act a a boy warrior but he feels drawn to hear and besides he wants to do his duty in marring her. But the are only married a matter of hours before things start to go South and they will have to start to learn to trust each other to get their happy ending. This was a hard to put down book for sure....loved it!
